One of the highly awaited features of Saturday Indesign, The Projects encourages architects, designers and creatives to collaborate with exhibiting companies, using their products to create installations, visual displays and interactive experiences within showroom spaces. The brief for 2024 challenged creative partners to foray on a transformative journey under the theme of ‘Reawaken’. The aim was to reimagine spaces by championing sustainability through recycling and reusing old products, pushing the boundaries of creativity and environmental awareness.

At this event, the winning collaboration of V-ZUG and Whitehouse Institute of Design captured the imagination of attendees and secured 40.4% of the votes. The multi-sensory gallery experience presented by this team wove together design, history and innovation, allowing visitors to explore V-ZUG’s design evolution while immersing themselves in a narrative that looked to the past and the future. Through interactive installations, the team created a journey of sight, sound and touch, revealing the future of premium lifestyle solutions through the creative lens of Whitehouse students. This winning project stood out for its innovative approach to storytelling through design, leaving a lasting impression on visitors.

Other notable projects included Hydrographia, a collaboration between Autex Acoustics, Infinity Commercial Furniture and students from Whitehouse Institute of Design. The installation reimagined an abstract underwater world, crafted from Autex’s products with zero waste, underscoring the sustainability focus. This installation brought to life the serene beauty of the ocean, inviting guests to ponder the fragility of life beneath the surface while celebrating the possibilities of material reuse and creative environmental design.

Meanwhile, New Skins, presented by K5 and Elton Group in collaboration with Jasper Knight, fused industrial landscapes with iconic design influences from Mondrian, Memphis and Bauhaus. This bold reimagining of architectural spaces showcased the fusion of old and new, encouraging attendees to experiment with the layering of design eras and materials. Knight’s signature vivid industrial landscapes brought an art gallery feel to the installation, offering a fearless approach to design that celebrated innovation through creative collaboration.

The Projects Wander by Klaro Industrial Design, Deco and Billy Blue College of Design combined design with refreshments in an engaging experience. The installations, created by students, were complemented by a casual atmosphere where attendees could enjoy smoothies and doughnuts while engaging with the young designers’ visions. This light-hearted and interactive approach brought a fresh perspective to design, making the experience both educational and enjoyable.

Finally, the collaboration between Maxton Fox, Kaolin Tiles and PTW’s Jacqueline Hall delivered a sophisticated design in Against the Grain. This bespoke piece of furniture fused classic shapes with contemporary style, using recyclable materials to create an elegant yet playful mosaic of porcelain tiles. Drawing inspiration from Ray Eames, the design turned furniture into a work of art, balancing sustainability with timeless appeal.

Each collaboration at Saturday Indesign 2024 showcased the creativity and potential that The Projects brings to life. With such dynamic installations and thought-provoking themes, the excitement for 2025 is already building as creatives anticipate even more bold, sustainable and innovative designs that will continue to push the boundaries of what’s possible.

Plus Architecture with AXOR has been announced as the People’s Choice Winner of The Project at Saturday Indesign 2023.

Voted as the most favoured immersive and inspiring showroom installation by over 200 voting participants, ‘f l u i d’ aimed to unite people, place and sustainability while framing utopia (the 2023 Project theme) as a harmonious, reciprocally adaptive world.

“While conveying the core elements that drove our concept, we wanted to create an immersive experience that engaged peoples’ senses,” says the Plus team, which worked in collaboration with Saturday Indesign exhibitor, AXOR, to create the installation for its Abbotsford showroom.

“When viewed at a distance, the installation effectively acted as a single dynamic sculpture, which drew people closer and encouraged them to inspect the individual elements,” says Plus.

The floating installation has been constructed from bottlecaps, sourced and repurposed from the designers’ local cafes. Over 1,400 bottlecaps were sourced. “To start with, we created a 3D model of our idea so we could accurately map how to thread and hang each cap to achieve our desired effect,” says the Plus team. “Once we knew how many different cap types we’d have after collection, we adapted our design to accommodate each size in a way that embodies the flow and motion of water.”

Here ‘f l u i d’ not only highlights the role people and sustainability play in our everyday lives, it also reflects back on perhaps AXOR’s most powerful element, water.

“When viewed at a distance, the installation effectively acted as a single dynamic sculpture, which drew people closer and encouraged them to inspect the individual elements. As they did this, the bottle caps, audio loop and water projections evoked their senses of sight, sound and touch,” says the Plus team.

For the design team, working with AXOR really highlighted the timelessness and versatility of the brand. “They’re a bit like Rolex – prioritising excellent engineering to create long-lasting, adaptable quality rather than churning out excessive quantities of products with one specific purpose,” says the Plus team. “This approach naturally lends itself to sustainability, and we love that they’ve always stayed true to their values.”

The winning installation was one of 10 different Project collaborations that competed for the People’s Choice. It used a total of 826 small caps, 361 medium, and 291 large. A massive effort – and a few late nights – from Plus’ very deserving Melbourne studio.

Congratulations Plus Architecture and AXOR!
