One of the highly awaited features of Saturday Indesign, The Projects encourages architects, designers and creatives to collaborate with exhibiting companies, using their products to create installations, visual displays and interactive experiences within showroom spaces. The brief for 2024 challenged creative partners to foray on a transformative journey under the theme of ‘Reawaken’. The aim was to reimagine spaces by championing sustainability through recycling and reusing old products, pushing the boundaries of creativity and environmental awareness.

At this event, the winning collaboration of V-ZUG and Whitehouse Institute of Design captured the imagination of attendees and secured 40.4% of the votes. The multi-sensory gallery experience presented by this team wove together design, history and innovation, allowing visitors to explore V-ZUG’s design evolution while immersing themselves in a narrative that looked to the past and the future. Through interactive installations, the team created a journey of sight, sound and touch, revealing the future of premium lifestyle solutions through the creative lens of Whitehouse students. This winning project stood out for its innovative approach to storytelling through design, leaving a lasting impression on visitors.

Other notable projects included Hydrographia, a collaboration between Autex Acoustics, Infinity Commercial Furniture and students from Whitehouse Institute of Design. The installation reimagined an abstract underwater world, crafted from Autex’s products with zero waste, underscoring the sustainability focus. This installation brought to life the serene beauty of the ocean, inviting guests to ponder the fragility of life beneath the surface while celebrating the possibilities of material reuse and creative environmental design.

Meanwhile, New Skins, presented by K5 and Elton Group in collaboration with Jasper Knight, fused industrial landscapes with iconic design influences from Mondrian, Memphis and Bauhaus. This bold reimagining of architectural spaces showcased the fusion of old and new, encouraging attendees to experiment with the layering of design eras and materials. Knight’s signature vivid industrial landscapes brought an art gallery feel to the installation, offering a fearless approach to design that celebrated innovation through creative collaboration.

RelatedSaturday Indesign panel discussions covered a wide range of critical ideas in 2024

The Projects Wander by Klaro Industrial Design, Deco and Billy Blue College of Design combined design with refreshments in an engaging experience. The installations, created by students, were complemented by a casual atmosphere where attendees could enjoy smoothies and doughnuts while engaging with the young designers’ visions. This light-hearted and interactive approach brought a fresh perspective to design, making the experience both educational and enjoyable.

Finally, the collaboration between Maxton Fox, Kaolin Tiles and PTW’s Jacqueline Hall delivered a sophisticated design in Against the Grain. This bespoke piece of furniture fused classic shapes with contemporary style, using recyclable materials to create an elegant yet playful mosaic of porcelain tiles. Drawing inspiration from Ray Eames, the design turned furniture into a work of art, balancing sustainability with timeless appeal.

Each collaboration at Saturday Indesign 2024 showcased the creativity and potential that The Projects brings to life. With such dynamic installations and thought-provoking themes, the excitement for 2025 is already building as creatives anticipate even more bold, sustainable and innovative designs that will continue to push the boundaries of what’s possible.

And that’s a wrap: Saturday Indesign was a design lover’s playground

Saturday Indesign official Afterparty celebrates the day in Signature style https://www.saturdayindesign.com/news/saturday-indesign-afterparty-3/ Mon, 16 Sep 2024 03:30:46 +0000 https://www.saturdayindesign.com/?p=6511 Returning to Sydney with a bang, Saturday Indesign’s buzzing Afterparty touched off a day of fun, connection and design knowledge.

As the sun set on Saturday Indesign, the crowds descended on Ovolo Woolloomooloo to finish off a long and stimulating day with some fun and revelry. For many, the last leg of the day involved the short stroll to Ovolo from Stylecraft’s 24th-floor party. We can neither confirm nor deny that Daft Punk showed up for a DJ set, but what we do know is that – after a full day of showroom visits and panel talks – the people of Sydney’s design community were ready to let loose after dark.

The 2024 Saturday Indesign Afterparty was put on in association with Signature Appliances and Ovolo Hotels, creating the perfect end to the standout day in the design calendar. Around 300 guests attended the exclusive ticketed party, which was held last year in Melbourne at Industry Lanes.

With the impressive Ovolo venue nestled on the edge of the harbour among Woolloomooloo’s wharves, guests were first greeted with an elegant entry sequence as they ascended from street level into the party area. With atmospheric lighting and a spacious setting, this year’s Afterparty allowed for both extravagant fun and serene pockets where friends old and news could catch up and reflect on the day.

The inviting Afterparty was populated with a wide cross-section of the design community, from showroom CEOs and high-profile designers to student volunteers who helped keep things moving at venues throughout the day.

Saturday Indesign is an action-packed day that takes over the design scene of a full city each year. Following Melbourne in 2023, it was Sydney’s turn again this year, with thousands of people – primarily architects, developers, design hunters, industrial designers, interior designers, manufacturers, product suppliers and specifiers – waltzing between the dozens of showrooms that opened their doors for the day.

Sydney was organised into several precincts for Saturday Indesign on 7th September, including Alexandria, Surry Hills and Paddington. The rhythm of the day will be a familiar one for attendees, as the morning calm before the storm soon becomes a frantic and fascinating dash between different showrooms. A series of stimulating design talks added substance and depth to the day, with many design practices touring groups around on buses to hop on and off at various venues.

As the afternoon faded and lunch offerings gave way to drinks, the atmosphere turned more towards the partying that culminates at the official Afterparty. As one of the largest and most successful Saturday Indesign events yet, the evening gathering was a fitting way to bring the whole day to a fun conclusion.

A huge thank you to all of our exhibitors, partners and attendees for making Saturday Indesign 2024 so special – and especially to all those who attended the Afterparty at Ovolo Woolloomooloo thanks to Singature Appliances.

Having taken over Melbourne for a day in 2023, the biggest single-day design event in the Australian calendar is back in Sydney this year. Saturday Indesign is set to take place on – you guessed it – Saturday, September 7.

The 2024 edition will include all of the things that have built Saturday Indesign’s reputation over the years, as well as some exciting new features to look forward to. This year, we are introducing the Design Passport Prize, a new accolade up for grabs. To be eligible for the draw of what will be a prize worth in excess of $5000, revellers simply need to attend ten or more showrooms and collect the visits on their design passport for the day.

A range of panel discussion will return in 2024 too. Last year, topics ranged from tips on design publishing and pitches to graduate experiences across architecture and design, with guests both domestic and international. Panel talks will feature as a highlight once, with a series of discussions set to be announced at different venues across the morning.

Venues will be clustered across the most creative districts of Sydney, with design districts covering Alexandria, Surry Hills, Darlinghurst, Chippendale and more. At the latest count, there will be 28 showrooms opening their doors – possibly more! Hop-on-hop-off buses will of course be there to help fill your design passports too, as well as VIP buses.

Nor would it be Saturday Indesign without the renowned afterpary! This year’s official gathering is set to take place at Ovolo Woolloomooloo with Signature Appliance – also the official tote partner – while the Saturday Indesign hydration partner in 2024 is Anterior XL.

There will be installations and creative projects on show across different venues – stay tuned for more information on those as we get closer to the main event.

Finally, make sure you get in touch if you’re interested in being a volunteer for Saturday Indesign 2024. It’s an excellent opportunity to meet people from across the industry – plus, you’ll receive a subscription to one of our titles as well as discounted entry to the afterparty!

The design industry is indeed a social community and 2023 has seen us come together with such enthusiasm and fervour – there can be no doubting that we find new energy and creative opportunity from engaging and collaborating with those around us.

Saturday Indesign (SID), now in its 20th year, really encapsulates that spirit of connectivity that makes the design community so unique and, well, fun. It’s an event that brings people together, invites them into the ‘homes’ of Australia’s leading purveyors of design, to experience showrooms as activated brand environments. Through interactive installations, dynamic design discussions, product launches and sublime hospitality, 34 exhibitors across 26 locations brought Saturday Indesign to vibrant life, this year in Melbourne.

Defined by three major design precincts of the city CBD, Richmond and Collingwood, the 2023 edition of Saturday Indesign enticed 2000 architects, designers and design lovers out from behind the desk to grab a classic ‘SID’ tote (this year created with bag partners Living Edge), and catch jaunty SID-branded buses (made possible thanks to transport partner Neolith), to sleuth out the best products and meet with friends and future contacts in some of Melbourne’s finest design showrooms.

Here we’ll take you on a whirlwind tour through each precinct, calling out the highlights along the way.

Welcome to Richmond

This year Richmond was flagged as Saturday Indesign’s largest Melbourne precinct, offering event-goers a dense and appealing group of exhibitors to visit – all within an easy walk.

Filling visitors with excitement was the official launch of Australia’s Molteni & C flagship store, unveiling creative director Vincent Van Duysen’s ‘Living Concept – A Warm and Fluid Home’.

Across the road, Jardan revealed its latest collection, seamlessly integrating this into its pop-up Café Jardan. Close by was Mobilia, which toured its visitors through its flagship store, and rewarded one lucky person with a trip to the Milan Furniture Fair – what an excellent door prize!

Reece and Neolith invited guests into Reece’s Richmond headquarters, known as The Works, staged The Project with Fraser and Partners, inviting guests to step into a mesmerising VR adventure where they could be whisked away to a breathtaking utopian bathroom scape.

Didier was a major product highlight, presenting two new furniture collections, entitled TanGuor and Etiquette, as well as an expanded selection of pieces for its established Gunzel Range. At Design Precinct could take part in special workshops and fuel themselves on tasty morsels from Supercheese and Olinda Specialist Cellars Gin and Wine Tasting.

Attracting a block-buster crowd for its Darren Palmer talk was Camerich, while Cosh Living and Cantilever hosted an ‘Australian Designed and Made’ discussion with collaborators Travis Dean and Katie Forbs (Cantilever Interiors) and Justin Hutchinson (Kett) on the panel.

Living Edge never disappoints and this year was no exception, with its carpark transformed into a live garden party. People grouped around the Extremis-designed Panigiri table and live musicians entertaining people with Greek tunes. Tucked next door was Thinking Works which rewarded one lucky visitor with a trip to Clerkenwell Design Week in London. And Winnings programmed a day of delicious cooking demonstrations, masterclasses and a barbecue feast.

Can’t get enough of Collingwood

Teaming up with Santa & Cole, AJAR staged The Project with a series of land and air scapes sculpted by the warm light of Santa & Cole’s Tekiò pendant lamp. Also filling their showroom with creative inspiration was AXOR with Plus Architecture who staged an ‘fluid’ water-projecting experience that immersed visitors in a multi-sensory wonderland.

ecf HFA put the focus on product innovation, presenting latest offerings from renowned brands Jonas Ihreborn, Luxxbox, Framery, Sedus and +Halle.

In an expansive warehouse space above its usual quarters, Great Dane brought its unique style with long, blue snaking modular sofas, where visitors photographed themselves to go in the running for a delicately designed Verpan lamp.

Across the road at HAY, a colourful cubby house – indeed the Colour Crate House – constructed by the team from numerous multi-hued crates (constructed from recycled content) created quite the buzz among visitors.

The ultimate hosts, K5 Furniture was home to multiple in-depth conversations – including Masanao Hamaguchi speaking with K5’s Suzette Jackson on the values and design thinking of craft furniture from the Hida Takayama region in the Gifu prefecture of Japan.

At ownworld crowds arrived early for the packed-out Publish Me! Panel discussion, and finished the day with music and dancing with DJ Dowel Jones on the decks. Just around the corner, Tait turned on its outdoor hospitality, staging a ‘how to create a natural Australian garden’ workshop with Phillip Withers.

With plenty to touch and look at, Surface Gallery and Style Timber Floors teamed up with design studio Hot Black delving into dreams and fears to present a Utopia x Dystopia installation.

At the centre of Melbourne’s CBD design scene

At Winya Indigenous Furniture presented the Woolee Woolee Keetwanta – An Indigenous Art Projection, and dazzled guests with a performance by Meriam drag artist and reigning champion of Miss First Nation, Cerulean.

Always a popular CBD destination, SZW with Omvivo and e&s hosted a champagne and oyster hour with David Hicks and showed off pop-y pink bathroom concepts, as well as the latest kitchen and bathroom concepts.

At Signature Floors, guests observed artists wielding tufting guns to highly creative effect. Meanwhile, at Aspect Furniture, the company teamed up with Dunlop Foam, Camira Fabrics, Autex, Wise Wool, and Critical to put the focus on sustainable products and manufacturing processes.

HOW. teamed up with Autex Acoustics for this edition of Saturday Indesign, working with RMIT to stage The Project and in-depth discussions for attentive audiences.

At Brickworks, an exhibition of work by architectural photographer Derek Swalwell was on show, and a rich conversation around Growing Graduates Into Leaders proved to be highly relevant and engaging.
