One of the highly awaited features of Saturday Indesign, The Projects encourages architects, designers and creatives to collaborate with exhibiting companies, using their products to create installations, visual displays and interactive experiences within showroom spaces. The brief for 2024 challenged creative partners to foray on a transformative journey under the theme of ‘Reawaken’. The aim was to reimagine spaces by championing sustainability through recycling and reusing old products, pushing the boundaries of creativity and environmental awareness.

At this event, the winning collaboration of V-ZUG and Whitehouse Institute of Design captured the imagination of attendees and secured 40.4% of the votes. The multi-sensory gallery experience presented by this team wove together design, history and innovation, allowing visitors to explore V-ZUG’s design evolution while immersing themselves in a narrative that looked to the past and the future. Through interactive installations, the team created a journey of sight, sound and touch, revealing the future of premium lifestyle solutions through the creative lens of Whitehouse students. This winning project stood out for its innovative approach to storytelling through design, leaving a lasting impression on visitors.

Other notable projects included Hydrographia, a collaboration between Autex Acoustics, Infinity Commercial Furniture and students from Whitehouse Institute of Design. The installation reimagined an abstract underwater world, crafted from Autex’s products with zero waste, underscoring the sustainability focus. This installation brought to life the serene beauty of the ocean, inviting guests to ponder the fragility of life beneath the surface while celebrating the possibilities of material reuse and creative environmental design.

Meanwhile, New Skins, presented by K5 and Elton Group in collaboration with Jasper Knight, fused industrial landscapes with iconic design influences from Mondrian, Memphis and Bauhaus. This bold reimagining of architectural spaces showcased the fusion of old and new, encouraging attendees to experiment with the layering of design eras and materials. Knight’s signature vivid industrial landscapes brought an art gallery feel to the installation, offering a fearless approach to design that celebrated innovation through creative collaboration.

The Projects Wander by Klaro Industrial Design, Deco and Billy Blue College of Design combined design with refreshments in an engaging experience. The installations, created by students, were complemented by a casual atmosphere where attendees could enjoy smoothies and doughnuts while engaging with the young designers’ visions. This light-hearted and interactive approach brought a fresh perspective to design, making the experience both educational and enjoyable.

Finally, the collaboration between Maxton Fox, Kaolin Tiles and PTW’s Jacqueline Hall delivered a sophisticated design in Against the Grain. This bespoke piece of furniture fused classic shapes with contemporary style, using recyclable materials to create an elegant yet playful mosaic of porcelain tiles. Drawing inspiration from Ray Eames, the design turned furniture into a work of art, balancing sustainability with timeless appeal.

Each collaboration at Saturday Indesign 2024 showcased the creativity and potential that The Projects brings to life. With such dynamic installations and thought-provoking themes, the excitement for 2025 is already building as creatives anticipate even more bold, sustainable and innovative designs that will continue to push the boundaries of what’s possible.

And that’s a wrap: Saturday Indesign was a design lover’s playground

As the standout day in the design calendar each year, Saturday Indesign is filled with fun. Professional designers and design enthusiasts traverse the city – this time, Sydney – to meet like-minded people, with the event providing an especially important opportunity for younger designers to network.

Despite the party antics that get going in the afternoon and culminate in the official Afterparty, Saturday Indesign is also about serious ideas. A series of panel talks curated by the Indesignlive editorial team brings together important figures from across the wider industry to give audiences insight into some of the hottest topics of the day.

This year, Winnings hosted a discussion on adaptive reuse. Moderated by Timothy Alouani-Roby, the panellists each had some significant project experience in reuse: John Prentice from Woods Bagot, Sarah Hurst from FK (who also travelled from Melbourne for the event) and Yi-han Cao from Tzannes. Drawing on their international experience, these experts emphasised something of the alchemy of adaptive reuse – just how amazing it can be to successfully reimagine the use of a space from one thing to another. Each drew on some personal anecdotes and design inspiration too, with mention of New York’s High Line project as well as Sydney’s Quay Quarter Tower, all while a packed audience at the showroom listened on.

Over at Kaolin in the afternoon, the question of Australian design aesthetics and their evolution was on the agenda. Having developed significantly, shaped by climate, regional identity and the country’s multiculturalism, the panellists explored whether a singular Australian aesthetic remains relevant today. Connection to Country are of course the most important aspect of this debate, and artist Nicole Monks provided insight from Indigenous perspective. She was joined by Bradhly Le of newly launched RIZEN Atelier and Lorena Gaxiola.

In the world of kitchen design, La Cornue hosted a talk on how heritage and innovation intersect as Australian designers look to European traditions, particularly French cuisine, for inspiration in blending luxury with cutting-edge technology. Harleen Grewal of Alexandra Kidd Interior Design joined Thomas Hamel and Eva-Marie Prineas of Studio Prineas for a discussion hosted, fittingly, by French design editor, Clémence Carayol.

Returning to the theme of sustainability, a discussion at Jardan focused on how considerations of circularity and reuse cannot simply be an afterthought. Instead, the experts explained how sustainability is central to the design process from the very start – before a concept is even sketched. Chris Fox joined Tilt’s Tim Phillips and Nick Garnham from Jardan for this discussion.

At Special Lights, Jan Henderson moderated a discussion on lighting in outdoor space by focusing on the thoughtful balance of light and shadow. These elements influence atmosphere, mood and function, especially in residential settings. Designers are exploring how natural lighting and shade can enhance both aesthetics and environmental sustainability in outdoor spaces, with this panel comprising Alexandra Kidd, Jason Gibney and Sally Evans.

Women designers and circular economy were the topics under discussion at Seeho. This panel explored how female designers have been pioneers in this space, challenging traditional, extraction-based modes of design and offering a more sustainable, long-term vision. Luxury Travel editor Madelin Tomelty moderated the talkm joined by Tracey Wiles of Woods Bagot, Dr Fiona Young of Hayball, and Laura Hamilton-O’Hara of the LFIA.

Lastly, the often-overlooked world of product design, especially hardware choices like door handles and metal finishes, took a welcome position under the spotlight at Savage Design. Specification choices at the level of hardware play a crucial role in the success of architectural and interior design projects, and the panellists here considered the respective strengths of spatial and product designers, as well as how they can best work together. Kate Goodwin led the discussion alongside Cox Architecture’s Ingrid Kelly, Joel Savage of Savage Design, and Dale O’Brien of Gray Puksand.

Saturday Indesign will return in 2025 – get ready to join us (again), and a huge thank you to all those who spoke as panellists, hosted as showrooms, and attended as spectators again in 2024.

As the sun set on Saturday Indesign, the crowds descended on Ovolo Woolloomooloo to finish off a long and stimulating day with some fun and revelry. For many, the last leg of the day involved the short stroll to Ovolo from Stylecraft’s 24th-floor party. We can neither confirm nor deny that Daft Punk showed up for a DJ set, but what we do know is that – after a full day of showroom visits and panel talks – the people of Sydney’s design community were ready to let loose after dark.

The 2024 Saturday Indesign Afterparty was put on in association with Signature Appliances and Ovolo Hotels, creating the perfect end to the standout day in the design calendar. Around 300 guests attended the exclusive ticketed party, which was held last year in Melbourne at Industry Lanes.

With the impressive Ovolo venue nestled on the edge of the harbour among Woolloomooloo’s wharves, guests were first greeted with an elegant entry sequence as they ascended from street level into the party area. With atmospheric lighting and a spacious setting, this year’s Afterparty allowed for both extravagant fun and serene pockets where friends old and news could catch up and reflect on the day.

The inviting Afterparty was populated with a wide cross-section of the design community, from showroom CEOs and high-profile designers to student volunteers who helped keep things moving at venues throughout the day.

Saturday Indesign is an action-packed day that takes over the design scene of a full city each year. Following Melbourne in 2023, it was Sydney’s turn again this year, with thousands of people – primarily architects, developers, design hunters, industrial designers, interior designers, manufacturers, product suppliers and specifiers – waltzing between the dozens of showrooms that opened their doors for the day.

Sydney was organised into several precincts for Saturday Indesign on 7th September, including Alexandria, Surry Hills and Paddington. The rhythm of the day will be a familiar one for attendees, as the morning calm before the storm soon becomes a frantic and fascinating dash between different showrooms. A series of stimulating design talks added substance and depth to the day, with many design practices touring groups around on buses to hop on and off at various venues.

As the afternoon faded and lunch offerings gave way to drinks, the atmosphere turned more towards the partying that culminates at the official Afterparty. As one of the largest and most successful Saturday Indesign events yet, the evening gathering was a fitting way to bring the whole day to a fun conclusion.

A huge thank you to all of our exhibitors, partners and attendees for making Saturday Indesign 2024 so special – and especially to all those who attended the Afterparty at Ovolo Woolloomooloo thanks to Singature Appliances.

Creativity and connection were at the fore at Saturday Indesign 2024, when Sydney metamorphosed into a design aficionado’s playground for a blockbuster day on 7 September. The event brought together the design elite with an impressive lineup of panel discussions, showroom tours, product launches and hands-on workshops. From one end of the city to the other, 29 showrooms opened their doors to welcome attendees for a day filled with innovation and inspiration. Designers, architects, industry professionals and enthusiasts came together to foray into the latest in furniture, interiors and product design, all while indulging their design palate (and their tastebuds with bottomless hospitality offerings.)

Attendees had the chance to get up close and personal with bespoke pieces and projects hosted by the most prodigious design companies, sparking discussions about what the future holds for design. Meanwhile, panel talks with design luminaries like Thomas Hamel and Greg Natale pulled crowds eager to hear from the most influential voices in the industry.

The assorted program of events kept attendees on their toes throughout the day. Whether it was taking part in a showroom tour to discover novel collections and concepts or diving into interactive installations that invited participation, there was never a dull moment. Workshops were buzzing with creative ideas, while impromptu conversations sparked collaborations over a drink or two. And let’s not forget the feast of food and drink — generously provided throughout the day. It’s safe to say, you were never left wanting.

As the day wound down, the festivities certainly did not. The afterparty at Ovolo Woolloomooloo, hosted in partnership with Signature Appliances, kept the ebullient energy alive as everyone gathered to celebrate an event. Conversations carried on late into the night, fuelled by the excitement of everything seen and learned (and more booze!)

Recharge your design inspiration with The Project

Saturday Indesign alumni know that The Project is one of the best features of the event, showcasing incredible design collaborations for bespoke installations. This year promises to have inspiration coming in spades, with creations that are all must-sees.

First up, Maxton Fox and Kaolin have partnered with PTW for a striking fusion of classic shapes and contemporary composition, while K5 and Elton Group have partnered with artist Jasper Knight to bring commissioned art pieces to life. Not to be outdone, V-ZUG and the Whitehouse Institute of Design have created a studio gallery within the V-ZUG showroom, and Klaro Industrial Design and DECO Australia have collaborated with the students from Billy Blue College of Design for “Project Wander”. Finally, Autex Acoustics and Infinity Commercial Furniture have also connected with the Whitehouse Institute of Design to create an abstract underwater world that explores what it means to “reawaken”.

See Sydney on Show

Every Saturday Indesign is an opportunity to see a city put on a show, and this year is no different, with the best of Sydney distilled into the full-day event. Find local favourites Mecca Coffee, AP Bakery, Cow and Moon Gelato, Messina Gelato, Brooklyn Boy Bagels, and Archie Rose popping up across different showrooms, while nightlife legend Brenton Parkes will also be on the decks into the late afternoon.

If you’re looking for a bit of international flair, Anterior XL are serving up an Italian feast, Kave Home are dishing out paella and striking up some Flamenco, Seeho Su are leaning into Asian Fusion, La Cornue have got an all-french affair, gohome have reuben sandwiches, Florabelle Living have mediterranean snacks and live jazz, Pure Interiors are also serving Italian dishes,  and LightCo are putting on a barbeque and beers

End a day of design with a night to remember

With so much on at Saturday Indesign, you’re in for a day you’ll never forget. But of course, the event doesn’t end when the last bus shuts its doors, rather attendees are invited to dance the night away at the official Saturday Indesign afterparty. Start your day off early with a 10am talk on Clay at Kaolin Porcelain Surfaces, while Molmic and Kave Home will also hold talks that explore themes close to the brands, starting from 11am respectively.

Head back to Kaolin for an 11:45am talk by the inimitable Greg Natale, while at 1:00pm, Living Edge will host a curated panel discussion on Exploring Wellbeing, Connection, And Change.

Connect over hospitality spreads and showroom tours

Fuel your design adventure with hospitality offerings and get to know the showrooms of Alexandria while you sip on coffees and aperitifs.

First up is Kaolin and Maxton Fox, who will kick off the morning with a serving of tea and scones, match these with some bubbly at LightCo, who will host mimosas and music from 9:30-11:00am. As the day sets in, head to Living Edge for a Danish Brunch from 11:00am-12:00pm, and then keep the European theme going with Paella at Kave Home from 12:00pm and live jazz, Mediterranean bites and Aperol at Florabelle Living from 1:00pm.

LightCo will keep the good vibes going with an afternoon “Grill and Groove” session from 130pm, while Molmic and Living Edge will wrap up the day with each hosting a happy hour(s) from 3:00pm, while Kaolin and Maxton Fox will kick their own cocktail hour off from 4:30pm.

Be sure to caffeinate with Mecca coffee, which will be roasted at DesignByThem from 10:00am-3:00pm, while Anterior XL will pay homage to their heritage with a “Mangia with Nonna” which will be serving up Italian hospitality right throughout the day.

Combine your hospitality with some connecting and showroom tours, with Kaolin hosting a showroom tour at 11:30am, then combining with Maxton Fox for a meet and greet lunch at 12:45pm. DesignByThem will also host a meet and greet over aperitivo at 2:00pm.

Calling all design lovers and event enthusiasts – the Saturday Indesign Design Discussion schedule has just dropped, and the lineup is every bit as educational and inspirational as you could have dreamed!

That’s right – Saturday Indesign’s full schedule has been announced, and it includes all the product launches, workshops, installations, tours, and hospitality that makes the event industry’s most loved day of the year.

As all Saturday Indesign regulars would know, our annual Design Discussion talk program is one of the hottest program sessions in town. Curated by our Indesign editorial team, the discussions feature panels of iconic and emerging talent exploring the most pressing topics and challenges facing designers today. This year’s lineup includes sessions on everything from adaptive reuse to the evolution of design typologies, and features speakers from across the spectrum of Australia’s architecture and design scene.

All Design Discussions are free to attend but often have only limited seats available, with capacities varied depending on the size of the host showroom. One thing’s for sure, as one of Saturday Indesign’s most loved components, each talk will be quick to fill up and bursting at the scenes. To avoid disappointment, or having to resort to listening in at the door, we recommend getting into the host showroom early and reserving your space for a front row experience.

Want to start planning your Design Discussion itinerary? Read on to see what we have coming up, head to our what’s on page to see everything that’s happening on Saturday September 7.

Saturday Indesign Design Discussions

10:00am-10:30am
Jardan, Paddington
Sustainability From The Start: How Do You Design With Reuse In Mind?

The most effective approaches to sustainability today involve factoring it in from the very beginning of the design process. Instead of playing catch-up once the object is already made, the most forward-thinking designers are already working through reuse, recycling and circular economy before the sketching pencil has even left the page. This panel will discuss the effectiveness of having an in-house research and design team, as well as getting perspectives from designers who work at larger scales and often make specification decisions.

On this panel: Chris Fox (Studio Chris Fox), Nick Garnham (Jardan), Tim Phillips (Tilt)

10:30am-11:00am
Winnings, Waterloo
Adaptive Reuse: A Deep Dive With Leading Industry Experts

It’s the topic and typology on every architect’s lips, but what exactly is adaptive reuse and why is it such an important talking point? This discussion brings together three heavy-hitters with some of the most recent, impressive project experience in this area. Drawing on global and local examples, the panellists will discuss why adaptive reuse is a meaningful approach to sustainability, what they’ve learned from recent projects, and what the future might hold in this space.

On this panel: John Prentice (Woods Bagot), Yi-han Cao (Tzannes), Sarah Hurst (FK)

11:00am-11:30am
Special Lights, Waterloo
Light And Dark In Outdoor Spaces

Light is only meaningful insofar as there is dark, so how do designers approach and deal with questions of shadow, natural light and atmosphere in outdoor residential spaces? This panel will bring together diverse practitioners of design, asking them to consider how their areas of expertise overlap when it comes to creating atmosphere and mood. They will also consider the environmental dimensions of outdoor lighting, as well as the growing distinction between function and decoration in these spaces.

On this panel: Sally Evans (Nexus Designs), Alexandra Kidd (Alexandra Kidd), Jason Gibney (Jason Gibney Design Workshop)

11:00am-11:30am
Savage Design, Surry Hills
Who Designs For The Designers? Product Specifications And The Value Of Hardware

Architects and designers often like to control a project at every scale, from the building facade to the door handle – but what about the expertise of products manufacturers and designers? Do other designers truly value and understand what they do? You might be familiar with how specification decisions are made, but this discussion will explore why. Our panellists will discuss the rationale behind hardware choices and, with a focus on metals, their importance to the success or failure of a project.

On this panel: Brooke Lloyd (COX Architecture), Dale O’Brien (Gray Puksand), Joel Savage (Savage Design)

11:30am-12:00pm
La Cornue, Surry Hills
Timeless Taste: Heritage Meets Innovation In Kitchen Design

Every brand is interested in innovation, technology and new ways of doing luxury — but not every one has a heritage stretching back into centuries-long artisan traditions. France has a long and prestigious tradition of cuisine, and many Australian designers look to Europe for inspiration. This panel will discuss how tradition and heritage affect design in terms of innovation, luxury and technology.

On this panel: Thomas Hamel (Thomas Hamel), Harleen Grewal (Alexandra Kidd), Eva-Marie Prineas (Studio Prineas)

12:00pm-12:30pm
Seeho Su, Waterloo
Women Designers Leading The Charge Towards Circular Economy

Before ‘sustainability’ became a buzzword, some companies were already practising principles of recycling and reuse as standard. This discussion will hone in on circular economy to ask what it really means, what’s new about it, and what it looks like in practice. More specifically, the all-women panel will bring a specifically female angle to a whose roots are all too often tied up with extractive, machismo modes of design. Celebrating the careers of women as experts in design, the discussion will bring a refreshing dynamic to the debate.

On this panel: Tracey Wiles (Woods Bagot), Fiona Young (Hayball), Laura Hamilton-O’Hara (Living Future Institute of Australia)

3:30pm-4:00pm
Kaolin Porcelain Surfaces, Alexandria
The Evolution Of Australian Aesthetics

What distinguishes Australian design aesthetics from those elsewhere? The answer given a century would likely have been very different to today’s. This panel will discuss how the idea of Australian aesthetics has changed, and even ask whether there is such a thing as a single Australian aesthetic. Specificity of place, in terms of climate and regional identity, will crossover with connection to Country and Australia’s contemporary identity as a multicultural, urbanised nation to consider what design aesthetics here mean in 2024.

On this panel: Bradhly Le (RIZEN Atelier), Nicole Monks (Nicole Monks), Lorena Gaxiola (Lorena Gaxiola)

With more speakers to be announced, keep your eyes peeled for updates and register today to be the first to know when new scheduled items or activations drop.

Saturday Indesign returns to Sydney on 7th September 2024. Attend on day and be in with the chance to win over $35,000 worth of prizes.
