Surely the industry’s most anticipated party, the Saturday Indesign Afterparty is the perfect way to keep the buzz going after an exciting event-filled day at Saturday Indesign.

The Afterparty was hosted this year at Richmond’s newly opened 5 Star Green Star workplace campus, Industry Lanes, thanks to Salta Properties and Abacus. Welcoming over 350 guests, party-goers started streaming in at 7pm, off the back of numerous wrap-up parties in exhibiting showrooms, ready to kick on and enjoy the beautiful Melbourne evening.

The central open-skied courtyard at Industry Lanes was lit up in hues of blues, purples and more. A dedicated dancefloor with DJ provided ample space for people to dance out the day.

Meanwhile long tables stretched the length of the event space supplying thirsty crowds with delicious drinks provided by beverage partners Handpicked Wines and Sopra Seltzer.

Crowds milled in groups and circulated, spotting old friends and meeting new faces, debriefing on their days, sharing in stories and toasting to the serendipity of excellent spring weather and a day well spent.

Held on Saturday 2 September in Melbourne, Saturday Indesign brought the city alive with a curated selection of 34 exhibitors across 26 locations, and 2000 architects, designers and design lovers hopping between showrooms spread across major precincts of Richmond, Collingwood and the CBD.

On 2 September, Melbourne will be transformed into a utopia of design, with Saturday Indesign and The Project inspiring our exhibitors and creatives to create their own versions of paradise. As if you needed any other reason to attend the industry’s most loved event, this year’s theme will have you transported into a fantasy unlike any other, with installations, activations and exhibitions taking you from the streets and showrooms of Melbourne into a world of imagination.

That’s right – the Project is back this year and participating exhibitors have been hard at work collaborating with design’s most innovative minds to create work drawn from a theme of “utopias”. The Project is one of Saturday Indesign’s most enduring elements and is a fan favourite year after year. It enables participating brands to flex their creative muscles and add to their showroom experience by installing a temporary, bespoke experience that speaks to their brand identity and vision.

More than just a physical creation, The Project is a testament to the power of collaboration, with brands working with architects, designers, artists and more to create something memorable, sustainable and evocative.

For 2023, Utopias has us counting down until September 2nd, with event day promising a series of Project submissions that will give us all a glimpse into a dream world that might just be the future of design. We’re thinking fields of flowers or installations with water, experimental design models or blueprints into sustainable futures – the possibilities are endless!

Ready to plan your Saturday Indesign experience around The Project? Read on and discover this year’s collaborations and get a sneak peek into just what they have planned or see examples from past Projects

Created by Anthony Dickens, this unique contemporary lamp is a contrast between the ancestral and the avant-garde.

Decolonisation seeks to reverse the negative impacts colonisation has had on Indigenous people and the land, particularly through direct and active listening to First Nation’s Voices. Winya’s space centres and celebrates Indigenous voices in the forms of space making, cultural sharing, and artist activations throughout the duration of the day. This space celebrates art and culture in many forms with community coming together to create a space almost entirely developed by First Nations people. We invite visitors on a journey starting at the intersection of Flinders Lane and Queen Street, travelling down Queen Street and through our showroom located at 15 Queen Street. Non-Indigenous visitors are encouraged to learn from and celebrate our cultural educators and performers through “paying the rent”.

Why do we “pay the rent”?

With Saturday Indesign just weeks away, it was time for all our 2022 exhibitors to come together for the iconic exhibitor meetup. Designed to bring everyone under one roof to share ideas, meet exhibitor neighbours and introduce the Indesign team, the 2022 instalment set the tone for a Saturday Indesign to remember.

Surry Hills institution The Clock played host to our 2022 cohort of exhibitors, where new connections were made and many laughs shared over drinks and nibbles. Importantly, Saturday Indesign debutant brands were able to pick the brains of some of our more seasoned exhibitors, learning the tricks of the trade for how to put on an amazing show.

The crowd included representatives from Living Edge, Savage Design, Neolith, Interface, Janus et Cie, Infinity Commercial Furniture, Polytec, Special Lights, Laine, Koda Lighting and many more. Exhibitors were also joined by team members from creative studios participating in The Project for 2022, including PTW and Squillace Architecture.

As the time ticks away until Saturday May 21st, make sure you’re there to see ideas come to fruition, with many installations, workshops, product launches, talks and hospitality plans currently in the works.
See the schedule and register your attendance for free here.
