On Saturday September 7, Saturday Indesign will be taking over Sydney, turning some of the city’s best design showrooms into an immersive footprint of activations, inspiration, and education. Over a jam-packed 24 hours, architects, designers, specifiers, and design lovers will descend on Sydney, criss-crossing through Alexandria, Waterloo, Surry Hills, Paddington, and Darlinghurst to hear and see talks, installations, workshops, and more.

One of the easiest precincts to navigate, Waterloo features some amazing showrooms and great initiatives to keep attendees entertained throughout the day, with the likes of Abey Australia, Autex Acoustics, Haworth, Infinity Commercial Furniture, Milliken, Pure Interiors, Seeho Su, Special Lights, and Winnings all opening their doors for the event. To help plan your day, we’ve rounded up the best things planned for Waterloo, so all you need to do is complete your free registration, grab your Signature Appliances official tote bag, plan your route, and dive into Waterloo for a day of design inspiration.

Top up your knowledge and skills with talks and workshops

Refuel your design knowledge in Waterloo with talks and interactive sessions that will recharge your specification experience. Pure Interiors will host Technogym for a Wellness Design Workshop at 10:00am, 12:00pm and 3:30pm, Winnings will dive into adaptive reuse at 10:30am, Autex and Infinity will hold a panel discussion on Modern Materiality at 11:00am, Jan Henderson will moderate a discussion at Special Lights on light and dark in outdoor spaces, Seeho Su will celebrate the leadership and innovation of female designers in their talk at 12:00pm, while Abey Australia welcome a special international speaker to help launch a new range of premium granite sinks at 11:00am.

If you want to get really immersive, head over to Winnings for an interactive clay workshop with Love Ryan Ceramics at 11:00am, then stick around for interactive live art with Daimon Downey at 12:00pm. Keep the experiential dial turned right up and cross the road to Haworth and Milliken to create your own viral dancing clip, stroll round the corner to Seeho Su to find out how to reduce your embodied carbon footprint, and then head over to Special Lights for a showroom tour that will show you how to create an Outdoor Oasis

Fuel your design adventures with hospitality and entertainment

With so much adventure to be had, sustenance is key to keeping the good times rolling, and our Waterloo showrooms are putting on an incredible spread.

Autex Acoustics and Infinity Commercial Furniture have you covered throughout the entire day, with barista coffee in the morning, and Brooklyn Boy bagels, Archie Rose Cocktails and Cow and Moon Gelato in the afternoon. Gelato lovers will be sorted for the whole day, with scoops also being served at Abey from 12:30pm, while Special Lights will have a Messina Gelato popup from 1:30pm along with a Garden Spritz bar from 11:00am.

For more substantial snacking, head to Seeho Su for lunch by PHAT ASIAN FUSION from 12:30pm, or to Pure Interiors for an Italian feast at 1:00pm, while Haworth and Milliken will be putting on a spread to coincide with their sessions on “A second life for products” (Haworth) and “Couture Customisation” (Milliken), which will occur three times throughout the day from their combined base at Studio Gallery on Danks St.

Once the day starts drawing to a close, get your dancing shoes on and head to Abey, who will have DJ’s spinning through the afternoon, with Brenton Parkes on the decks.

Win big in Waterloo and all over Saturday Indesign

Saturday Indesign wouldn’t be complete without an iconic prize pool, and this year we’re taking it up a notch, with the inaugural Design Passport in play throughout the event. Featuring a prize pool worth over $35,000, the Design Passport is open to attendees who check in to 10 or more showrooms throughout the day and is the easiest way to win big at Saturday Indesign.

End a day of design with a night to remember

With so much on in Waterloo and right across the Saturday Indesign map, you’re in for a day of design you’ll never forget. But of course, the event doesn’t end when the last showroom shuts its doors, rather attendees are invited to dance the night away at the official Saturday Indesign afterparty. Presented by Signature Appliances, be sure to grab a ticket before they run out – this is a party you won’t want to miss!

We’re officially counting the days until Saturday September 7, when Saturday Indesign will be back for 2024. And with less than a week remaining, we can’t wait to see Sydney turn into a bustling utopia of design. This year is shaping up to be one of the best events yet, with 36 Exhibitors putting on over 121 activations to create an action-packed day of all the best inspiration, education, and newness you need to fuel Australia’s design scene.

If you’re new to Saturday Indesign, you can expect to be amazed and engaged, with immersive experiences held across a curated event map spanning Alexandria, Waterloo, Surry Hills, Darlinghurst, and Paddington. Forget everything you think you know about design events, because Saturday Indesign is in a league of its own. Running like a “choose your own adventure”, this event sees attendees criss-cross around the city, hopping on and off our event buses and they head into showrooms that have put on timed events, hospitality, and installations for this one off day.

The best part? Everything is totally, 100% free, with just a simple registration giving you access to all the locations, transport, events, food, and drink put on across the event.

All you need to do is complete your free registration, then be sure to check the event map, check the on-day itinerary, and get in early to secure your exclusive Signature Appliances tote bag. If you’re somehow still not sold, read on and discover the five reasons you absolutely have to be at Saturday Indesign on Saturday September 7.

Make new connections and discover Sydney’s best showrooms

The beauty of Saturday Indesign is in its format, where showrooms become their own mini event ecosystems. Instead of visiting brands at a trade show stand, you’ll get to know them better, experiencing them on their home ground to meet their teams, see all their products, and understand their offerings, services, and identity.

For 2024, we have some of Sydney’s best exhibitors on show, either opening up their showroom doors, operating from a satellite space, or sharing a fellow exhibitor’s showroom to get you to the most connections possible across a full day of design.

This year’s exhibitors include: Abey Australia, Academy Tiles, Anterior XL, Autex Acoustics, Cult, DECO Australia, DesignByThem, District, Elton Group, Florabelle Living, Gaggenau, Gohome, Haworth, Infinity Commercial Furniture, Innerspace, Jardan, K5 Furniture, Kaolin Porcelain Surfaces, Kave Home, Klaro Industrial Design, La Cornue, LightCo, Living Edge, Maxton Fox, Milliken, Molmic, ownworld, Pure Interiors, Savage Design, Seeho Su, Special Lights, Stylecraft, V-ZUG, and Winnings

Score some sweet prizes

Saturday Indesign wouldn’t be complete without an iconic prize pool, and this year we’re taking it up a notch, with the inaugural Design Passport in play throughout the event. Featuring a prize pool worth over $35,000, the Design Passport is open to attendees who check in to 10 or more showrooms throughout the day and is the easiest way to win big at Saturday Indesign.

Be on the forefront of local and international design

Saturday Indesign is a must-attend for those looking to get out in front of the pack, with a program of talks and product launches that will deliver you a fresh serving of newness to supercharge your specification.

If talks are your thing, there’s a selection of curated Design Discussions that will have your name on them, including sessions on Australian aesthetics, kitchen design, adaptive reuse, women in architecture and design, product design, outdoor design, and sustainability. If you still can’t get enough, you’ll find other talks rolling out across different showrooms, with the likes of Kave Home, DesignByThem, Living Edge, Innerspace, K5 & Elton GroupMolmic, and Stylecraft all hosting their own sessions.

Top up your fresh knowledge with new products and be the first to see some of the country’s most anticipated launches. From Haworth’s new Task Chair and Milliken’s new carpet collection, to premium induction cooking at Gaggenau and new furniture by Cult, you’ll see newness everywhere you look at Saturday Indesign.

Recharge your design inspiration with The Project

Saturday Indesign alumni know that The Project is one of the best features of the event, showcasing incredible design collaborations for bespoke installations. This year promises to have inspiration coming in spades, with creations that are all must-sees.

First up, Maxton Fox and Kaolin have partnered with PTW for a striking fusion of classic shapes and contemporary composition, while K5 and Elton Group have partnered with artist Jasper Knight to bring commissioned art pieces to life. Not to be outdone, V-ZUG and the Whitehouse Institute of Design have created a studio gallery within the V-ZUG showroom, and Klaro Industrial Design and DECO Australia have collaborated with the students from Billy Blue College of Design for “Project Wander”. Finally, Autex Acoustics and Infinity Commercial Furniture have also connected with the Whitehouse Institute of Design to create an abstract underwater world that explores what it means to “reawaken”.

See Sydney on Show

Every Saturday Indesign is an opportunity to see a city put on a show, and this year is no different, with the best of Sydney distilled into the full-day event. Find local favourites Mecca Coffee, AP Bakery, Cow and Moon Gelato, Messina Gelato, Brooklyn Boy Bagels, and Archie Rose popping up across different showrooms, while nightlife legend Brenton Parkes will also be on the decks into the late afternoon.

If you’re looking for a bit of international flair, Anterior XL are serving up an Italian feast, Kave Home are dishing out paella and striking up some Flamenco, Seeho Su are leaning into Asian Fusion, La Cornue have got an all-french affair, gohome have reuben sandwiches, Florabelle Living have mediterranean snacks and live jazz, Pure Interiors are also serving Italian dishes,  and LightCo are putting on a barbeque and beers

End a day of design with a night to remember

With so much on at Saturday Indesign, you’re in for a day you’ll never forget. But of course, the event doesn’t end when the last bus shuts its doors, rather attendees are invited to dance the night away at the official Saturday Indesign afterparty. Presented by Signature Appliances, be sure to grab a ticket before they run out – this is a party you won’t want to miss!

Calling all design lovers and event enthusiasts – the Saturday Indesign Design Discussion schedule has just dropped, and the lineup is every bit as educational and inspirational as you could have dreamed!

That’s right – Saturday Indesign’s full schedule has been announced, and it includes all the product launches, workshops, installations, tours, and hospitality that makes the event industry’s most loved day of the year.

As all Saturday Indesign regulars would know, our annual Design Discussion talk program is one of the hottest program sessions in town. Curated by our Indesign editorial team, the discussions feature panels of iconic and emerging talent exploring the most pressing topics and challenges facing designers today. This year’s lineup includes sessions on everything from adaptive reuse to the evolution of design typologies, and features speakers from across the spectrum of Australia’s architecture and design scene.

All Design Discussions are free to attend but often have only limited seats available, with capacities varied depending on the size of the host showroom. One thing’s for sure, as one of Saturday Indesign’s most loved components, each talk will be quick to fill up and bursting at the scenes. To avoid disappointment, or having to resort to listening in at the door, we recommend getting into the host showroom early and reserving your space for a front row experience.

Want to start planning your Design Discussion itinerary? Read on to see what we have coming up, head to our what’s on page to see everything that’s happening on Saturday September 7.

Saturday Indesign Design Discussions

10:00am-10:30am
Jardan, Paddington
Sustainability From The Start: How Do You Design With Reuse In Mind?

The most effective approaches to sustainability today involve factoring it in from the very beginning of the design process. Instead of playing catch-up once the object is already made, the most forward-thinking designers are already working through reuse, recycling and circular economy before the sketching pencil has even left the page. This panel will discuss the effectiveness of having an in-house research and design team, as well as getting perspectives from designers who work at larger scales and often make specification decisions.

On this panel: Chris Fox (Studio Chris Fox), Nick Garnham (Jardan), Tim Phillips (Tilt)

10:30am-11:00am
Winnings, Waterloo
Adaptive Reuse: A Deep Dive With Leading Industry Experts

It’s the topic and typology on every architect’s lips, but what exactly is adaptive reuse and why is it such an important talking point? This discussion brings together three heavy-hitters with some of the most recent, impressive project experience in this area. Drawing on global and local examples, the panellists will discuss why adaptive reuse is a meaningful approach to sustainability, what they’ve learned from recent projects, and what the future might hold in this space.

On this panel: John Prentice (Woods Bagot), Yi-han Cao (Tzannes), Sarah Hurst (FK)

11:00am-11:30am
Special Lights, Waterloo
Light And Dark In Outdoor Spaces

Light is only meaningful insofar as there is dark, so how do designers approach and deal with questions of shadow, natural light and atmosphere in outdoor residential spaces? This panel will bring together diverse practitioners of design, asking them to consider how their areas of expertise overlap when it comes to creating atmosphere and mood. They will also consider the environmental dimensions of outdoor lighting, as well as the growing distinction between function and decoration in these spaces.

On this panel: Sally Evans (Nexus Designs), Alexandra Kidd (Alexandra Kidd), Jason Gibney (Jason Gibney Design Workshop)

11:00am-11:30am
Savage Design, Surry Hills
Who Designs For The Designers? Product Specifications And The Value Of Hardware

Architects and designers often like to control a project at every scale, from the building facade to the door handle – but what about the expertise of products manufacturers and designers? Do other designers truly value and understand what they do? You might be familiar with how specification decisions are made, but this discussion will explore why. Our panellists will discuss the rationale behind hardware choices and, with a focus on metals, their importance to the success or failure of a project.

On this panel: Brooke Lloyd (COX Architecture), Dale O’Brien (Gray Puksand), Joel Savage (Savage Design)

11:30am-12:00pm
La Cornue, Surry Hills
Timeless Taste: Heritage Meets Innovation In Kitchen Design

Every brand is interested in innovation, technology and new ways of doing luxury — but not every one has a heritage stretching back into centuries-long artisan traditions. France has a long and prestigious tradition of cuisine, and many Australian designers look to Europe for inspiration. This panel will discuss how tradition and heritage affect design in terms of innovation, luxury and technology.

On this panel: Thomas Hamel (Thomas Hamel), Harleen Grewal (Alexandra Kidd), Eva-Marie Prineas (Studio Prineas)

12:00pm-12:30pm
Seeho Su, Waterloo
Women Designers Leading The Charge Towards Circular Economy

Before ‘sustainability’ became a buzzword, some companies were already practising principles of recycling and reuse as standard. This discussion will hone in on circular economy to ask what it really means, what’s new about it, and what it looks like in practice. More specifically, the all-women panel will bring a specifically female angle to a whose roots are all too often tied up with extractive, machismo modes of design. Celebrating the careers of women as experts in design, the discussion will bring a refreshing dynamic to the debate.

On this panel: Tracey Wiles (Woods Bagot), Fiona Young (Hayball), Laura Hamilton-O’Hara (Living Future Institute of Australia)

3:30pm-4:00pm
Kaolin Porcelain Surfaces, Alexandria
The Evolution Of Australian Aesthetics

What distinguishes Australian design aesthetics from those elsewhere? The answer given a century would likely have been very different to today’s. This panel will discuss how the idea of Australian aesthetics has changed, and even ask whether there is such a thing as a single Australian aesthetic. Specificity of place, in terms of climate and regional identity, will crossover with connection to Country and Australia’s contemporary identity as a multicultural, urbanised nation to consider what design aesthetics here mean in 2024.

On this panel: Bradhly Le (RIZEN Atelier), Nicole Monks (Nicole Monks), Lorena Gaxiola (Lorena Gaxiola)

With more speakers to be announced, keep your eyes peeled for updates and register today to be the first to know when new scheduled items or activations drop.

Saturday Indesign returns to Sydney on 7th September 2024. Attend on day and be in with the chance to win over $35,000 worth of prizes. With Saturday Indesign just weeks away, it was time for all our 2022 exhibitors to come together for the iconic exhibitor meetup. Designed to bring everyone under one roof to share ideas, meet exhibitor neighbours and introduce the Indesign team, the 2022 instalment set the tone for a Saturday Indesign to remember.

Surry Hills institution The Clock played host to our 2022 cohort of exhibitors, where new connections were made and many laughs shared over drinks and nibbles. Importantly, Saturday Indesign debutant brands were able to pick the brains of some of our more seasoned exhibitors, learning the tricks of the trade for how to put on an amazing show.

The crowd included representatives from Living Edge, Savage Design, Neolith, Interface, Janus et Cie, Infinity Commercial Furniture, Polytec, Special Lights, Laine, Koda Lighting and many more. Exhibitors were also joined by team members from creative studios participating in The Project for 2022, including PTW and Squillace Architecture.

As the time ticks away until Saturday May 21st, make sure you’re there to see ideas come to fruition, with many installations, workshops, product launches, talks and hospitality plans currently in the works.
See the schedule and register your attendance for free here.
