Saturday September 7 is just days away, which means we’re within touching distance of the next Saturday Indesign. Check out our precinct guides for all the other suburbs or read on to see the ultimate lineup for Darlinghurst and Paddington below.

Already a hub of design, this precinct is one to watch, with some serious industry heavyweights lining up to open their showrooms to Saturday Indesign guests. Be sure to stop by Cult, District, Gohome, Innerspace, Jardan, ownworld, and Stylecraft to get your fill of Sydney’s best design inspiration.

Don’t miss out on Australia’s best day of design! Simply complete your free registration, grab your Signature Appliances official tote bag, plan your route, and dive into Darlinghurst and Paddington for a day of design inspiration.

Discover the best new products

Products are the star of the show in Darlinghurst and Paddington, with everything from new launches to legacy lines all on show. This precinct features some of Sydney’s most established names for a celebration of local and international design with a focus on innovation. Head to Cult for the launch of Adam Goodrum’s latest range and another from Wendelbo, while District will also be celebrating a new collection by Adam Cornish. It’s a whole new world for Gohome, who will celebrate the launch of their Sydney showroom at Saturday Indesign, while ownworld and Stylecraft will both create a visual narrative of timeless design.

Treat yourself

Saturday Indesign is a big event day, but thanks to our exhibitors, you won’t be doing design on an empty stomach, with plenty of pit stops popping up across the different showrooms. Start the day off at District with breakfast pastries from local favourites A.P Bakery, while Gohome will be offering chef-made reuben sandwiches for lunch. If you’re feeling peckish in the afternoon, Cult will have pastries to nibble on while you chat with top designers, while a stop by Innerspace’s Wimbledon-inspired lawn is a must-do. Jardan will be mixing cocktails in their after-dark lounge, while Stylecraft will be serving up delicacies all day, with granola and coffee in the morning, lobster rolls for lunch, gelato for afternoon tea, and aperitivo as the sun starts to set.

Hear from industry experts with inspiring panel discussions

If you’re on the lookout for some fresh insights and leading design knowledge, the Saturday Indesign talks program is where it’s at. Stop by Jardan for the precinct’s first Design Discussion, where you’ll hear from the likes of Tim Phillips, Nick Garnham, Chris Fox, and moderator Clémence Carayol on sustainability in the design process. At 11am, Innerspace and Stylecraft will both have talks in their spaces, with the former hosting an intimate conversation on emotional and everlasting design with Ross Didier and Alice Blackwood, and the latter looking at creativity, curiosity, innovation, and partnerships in next-gen materials with a host of industry-leading names in sustainability.

Win big in Darlinghurst and Paddington and all over Saturday Indesign

Saturday Indesign wouldn’t be complete without an iconic prize pool, and this year we’re taking it up a notch, with the inaugural Design Passport in play throughout the event. Featuring a prize pool worth over $35,000, the Design Passport is open to attendees who check in to 10 or more showrooms throughout the day and is the easiest way to win big at Saturday Indesign.

Plus, win some of your favourite products and experiences thanks to your favourite brands, with Cult and District offering up some sweet giveaways.

End a day of design with a night to remember

With so much on in Paddington & Darlinghurst and right across the Saturday Indesign map, you’re in for a day of design you’ll never forget. But of course, the event doesn’t end when the last showrooms shuts its doors, rather attendees are invited to dance the night away at the official Saturday Indesign afterparty. Presented by Signature Appliances, be sure to grab a ticket before they run out – this is a party you won’t want to miss!

We’re officially counting the days until Saturday September 7, when Saturday Indesign will be back for 2024. And with less than a week remaining, we can’t wait to see Sydney turn into a bustling utopia of design. This year is shaping up to be one of the best events yet, with 36 Exhibitors putting on over 121 activations to create an action-packed day of all the best inspiration, education, and newness you need to fuel Australia’s design scene.

If you’re new to Saturday Indesign, you can expect to be amazed and engaged, with immersive experiences held across a curated event map spanning Alexandria, Waterloo, Surry Hills, Darlinghurst, and Paddington. Forget everything you think you know about design events, because Saturday Indesign is in a league of its own. Running like a “choose your own adventure”, this event sees attendees criss-cross around the city, hopping on and off our event buses and they head into showrooms that have put on timed events, hospitality, and installations for this one off day.

The best part? Everything is totally, 100% free, with just a simple registration giving you access to all the locations, transport, events, food, and drink put on across the event.

All you need to do is complete your free registration, then be sure to check the event map, check the on-day itinerary, and get in early to secure your exclusive Signature Appliances tote bag. If you’re somehow still not sold, read on and discover the five reasons you absolutely have to be at Saturday Indesign on Saturday September 7.

Make new connections and discover Sydney’s best showrooms

The beauty of Saturday Indesign is in its format, where showrooms become their own mini event ecosystems. Instead of visiting brands at a trade show stand, you’ll get to know them better, experiencing them on their home ground to meet their teams, see all their products, and understand their offerings, services, and identity.

For 2024, we have some of Sydney’s best exhibitors on show, either opening up their showroom doors, operating from a satellite space, or sharing a fellow exhibitor’s showroom to get you to the most connections possible across a full day of design.

This year’s exhibitors include: Abey Australia, Academy Tiles, Anterior XL, Autex Acoustics, Cult, DECO Australia, DesignByThem, District, Elton Group, Florabelle Living, Gaggenau, Gohome, Haworth, Infinity Commercial Furniture, Innerspace, Jardan, K5 Furniture, Kaolin Porcelain Surfaces, Kave Home, Klaro Industrial Design, La Cornue, LightCo, Living Edge, Maxton Fox, Milliken, Molmic, ownworld, Pure Interiors, Savage Design, Seeho Su, Special Lights, Stylecraft, V-ZUG, and Winnings

Score some sweet prizes

Saturday Indesign wouldn’t be complete without an iconic prize pool, and this year we’re taking it up a notch, with the inaugural Design Passport in play throughout the event. Featuring a prize pool worth over $35,000, the Design Passport is open to attendees who check in to 10 or more showrooms throughout the day and is the easiest way to win big at Saturday Indesign.

Be on the forefront of local and international design

Saturday Indesign is a must-attend for those looking to get out in front of the pack, with a program of talks and product launches that will deliver you a fresh serving of newness to supercharge your specification.

If talks are your thing, there’s a selection of curated Design Discussions that will have your name on them, including sessions on Australian aesthetics, kitchen design, adaptive reuse, women in architecture and design, product design, outdoor design, and sustainability. If you still can’t get enough, you’ll find other talks rolling out across different showrooms, with the likes of Kave Home, DesignByThem, Living Edge, Innerspace, K5 & Elton GroupMolmic, and Stylecraft all hosting their own sessions.

Top up your fresh knowledge with new products and be the first to see some of the country’s most anticipated launches. From Haworth’s new Task Chair and Milliken’s new carpet collection, to premium induction cooking at Gaggenau and new furniture by Cult, you’ll see newness everywhere you look at Saturday Indesign.

Recharge your design inspiration with The Project

Saturday Indesign alumni know that The Project is one of the best features of the event, showcasing incredible design collaborations for bespoke installations. This year promises to have inspiration coming in spades, with creations that are all must-sees.

First up, Maxton Fox and Kaolin have partnered with PTW for a striking fusion of classic shapes and contemporary composition, while K5 and Elton Group have partnered with artist Jasper Knight to bring commissioned art pieces to life. Not to be outdone, V-ZUG and the Whitehouse Institute of Design have created a studio gallery within the V-ZUG showroom, and Klaro Industrial Design and DECO Australia have collaborated with the students from Billy Blue College of Design for “Project Wander”. Finally, Autex Acoustics and Infinity Commercial Furniture have also connected with the Whitehouse Institute of Design to create an abstract underwater world that explores what it means to “reawaken”.

See Sydney on Show

Every Saturday Indesign is an opportunity to see a city put on a show, and this year is no different, with the best of Sydney distilled into the full-day event. Find local favourites Mecca Coffee, AP Bakery, Cow and Moon Gelato, Messina Gelato, Brooklyn Boy Bagels, and Archie Rose popping up across different showrooms, while nightlife legend Brenton Parkes will also be on the decks into the late afternoon.

If you’re looking for a bit of international flair, Anterior XL are serving up an Italian feast, Kave Home are dishing out paella and striking up some Flamenco, Seeho Su are leaning into Asian Fusion, La Cornue have got an all-french affair, gohome have reuben sandwiches, Florabelle Living have mediterranean snacks and live jazz, Pure Interiors are also serving Italian dishes, and LightCo are putting on a barbeque and beers

End a day of design with a night to remember

With so much on at Saturday Indesign, you’re in for a day you’ll never forget. But of course, the event doesn’t end when the last bus shuts its doors, rather attendees are invited to dance the night away at the official Saturday Indesign afterparty. Presented by Signature Appliances, be sure to grab a ticket before they run out – this is a party you won’t want to miss!

Calling all design lovers and event enthusiasts – the Saturday Indesign Design Discussion schedule has just dropped, and the lineup is every bit as educational and inspirational as you could have dreamed!

That’s right – Saturday Indesign’s full schedule has been announced, and it includes all the product launches, workshops, installations, tours, and hospitality that makes the event industry’s most loved day of the year.

As all Saturday Indesign regulars would know, our annual Design Discussion talk program is one of the hottest program sessions in town. Curated by our Indesign editorial team, the discussions feature panels of iconic and emerging talent exploring the most pressing topics and challenges facing designers today. This year’s lineup includes sessions on everything from adaptive reuse to the evolution of design typologies, and features speakers from across the spectrum of Australia’s architecture and design scene.

All Design Discussions are free to attend but often have only limited seats available, with capacities varied depending on the size of the host showroom. One thing’s for sure, as one of Saturday Indesign’s most loved components, each talk will be quick to fill up and bursting at the scenes. To avoid disappointment, or having to resort to listening in at the door, we recommend getting into the host showroom early and reserving your space for a front row experience.

Want to start planning your Design Discussion itinerary? Read on to see what we have coming up, head to our what’s on page to see everything that’s happening on Saturday September 7.

Saturday Indesign Design Discussions

10:00am-10:30am
Jardan, Paddington
Sustainability From The Start: How Do You Design With Reuse In Mind?

The most effective approaches to sustainability today involve factoring it in from the very beginning of the design process. Instead of playing catch-up once the object is already made, the most forward-thinking designers are already working through reuse, recycling and circular economy before the sketching pencil has even left the page. This panel will discuss the effectiveness of having an in-house research and design team, as well as getting perspectives from designers who work at larger scales and often make specification decisions.

On this panel: Chris Fox (Studio Chris Fox), Nick Garnham (Jardan), Tim Phillips (Tilt)

10:30am-11:00am
Winnings, Waterloo
Adaptive Reuse: A Deep Dive With Leading Industry Experts

It’s the topic and typology on every architect’s lips, but what exactly is adaptive reuse and why is it such an important talking point? This discussion brings together three heavy-hitters with some of the most recent, impressive project experience in this area. Drawing on global and local examples, the panellists will discuss why adaptive reuse is a meaningful approach to sustainability, what they’ve learned from recent projects, and what the future might hold in this space.

On this panel: John Prentice (Woods Bagot), Yi-han Cao (Tzannes), Sarah Hurst (FK)

11:00am-11:30am
Special Lights, Waterloo
Light And Dark In Outdoor Spaces

Light is only meaningful insofar as there is dark, so how do designers approach and deal with questions of shadow, natural light and atmosphere in outdoor residential spaces? This panel will bring together diverse practitioners of design, asking them to consider how their areas of expertise overlap when it comes to creating atmosphere and mood. They will also consider the environmental dimensions of outdoor lighting, as well as the growing distinction between function and decoration in these spaces.

On this panel: Sally Evans (Nexus Designs), Alexandra Kidd (Alexandra Kidd), Jason Gibney (Jason Gibney Design Workshop)

11:00am-11:30am
Savage Design, Surry Hills
Who Designs For The Designers? Product Specifications And The Value Of Hardware

Architects and designers often like to control a project at every scale, from the building facade to the door handle – but what about the expertise of products manufacturers and designers? Do other designers truly value and understand what they do? You might be familiar with how specification decisions are made, but this discussion will explore why. Our panellists will discuss the rationale behind hardware choices and, with a focus on metals, their importance to the success or failure of a project.

On this panel: Brooke Lloyd (COX Architecture), Dale O’Brien (Gray Puksand), Joel Savage (Savage Design)

11:30am-12:00pm
La Cornue, Surry Hills
Timeless Taste: Heritage Meets Innovation In Kitchen Design

Every brand is interested in innovation, technology and new ways of doing luxury — but not every one has a heritage stretching back into centuries-long artisan traditions. France has a long and prestigious tradition of cuisine, and many Australian designers look to Europe for inspiration. This panel will discuss how tradition and heritage affect design in terms of innovation, luxury and technology.

On this panel: Thomas Hamel (Thomas Hamel), Harleen Grewal (Alexandra Kidd), Eva-Marie Prineas (Studio Prineas)

12:00pm-12:30pm
Seeho Su, Waterloo
Women Designers Leading The Charge Towards Circular Economy

Before ‘sustainability’ became a buzzword, some companies were already practising principles of recycling and reuse as standard. This discussion will hone in on circular economy to ask what it really means, what’s new about it, and what it looks like in practice. More specifically, the all-women panel will bring a specifically female angle to a whose roots are all too often tied up with extractive, machismo modes of design. Celebrating the careers of women as experts in design, the discussion will bring a refreshing dynamic to the debate.

On this panel: Tracey Wiles (Woods Bagot), Fiona Young (Hayball), Laura Hamilton-O’Hara (Living Future Institute of Australia)

3:30pm-4:00pm
Kaolin Porcelain Surfaces, Alexandria
The Evolution Of Australian Aesthetics

What distinguishes Australian design aesthetics from those elsewhere? The answer given a century would likely have been very different to today’s. This panel will discuss how the idea of Australian aesthetics has changed, and even ask whether there is such a thing as a single Australian aesthetic. Specificity of place, in terms of climate and regional identity, will crossover with connection to Country and Australia’s contemporary identity as a multicultural, urbanised nation to consider what design aesthetics here mean in 2024.

On this panel: Bradhly Le (RIZEN Atelier), Nicole Monks (Nicole Monks), Lorena Gaxiola (Lorena Gaxiola)

With more speakers to be announced, keep your eyes peeled for updates and register today to be the first to know when new scheduled items or activations drop.

What we Learnt at the 2023 Saturday Indesign Design Discussions https://www.saturdayindesign.com/news/2023-saturday-indesign-design-discussions/ Fri, 08 Sep 2023 03:23:52 +0000 https://www.saturdayindesign.com/?p=5360 This year’s Saturday Indesign was bigger and better than ever before! Alongside the partying and networking, a series of panel talks on the hot topics in design provided insight and inspiration for the whole day.

The post What we Learnt at the 2023 Saturday Indesign Design Discussions appeared first on Saturday Indesign.

]]>
Taking place across the three design districts in Melbourne on 2 September, Saturday Indesign 2023 featured a packed schedule with 34 exhibitors and over 1900 architects, designers and design lovers in attendance. 26 different locations across Melbourne’s CBD, Richmond and Collingwood played host to a variety of events, while the day culminated with hundreds attending the Saturday Indesign Afterparty at Industry Lanes. A very special thank you goes to our transport partners, Neolith, and bag partners, Living Edge.

Saturday Indesign is filled with fun – anyone who stayed late at the Afterparty can attest to that – but it’s also a day for some serious design thinking and knowledge sharing, not to mention the opportunities for networking and building relationships across the industry. This year’s Design Discussions formed a core part of the program throughout the day and covered a wide range of topics, from wellbeing at work to the experiences of graduates in architecture. We delve into the panel talk topics and provide a comprehensive guide to the stellar selection of expert speakers who inspired us.

Publish Me!

Senior figures from across media, marketing and PR came together at Ownworld in the Collingwood Precinct to discuss how to read today’s media landscape and stand out from the crowd.

Led by Indesign editor, Alice Blackwood, the discussion covered tactics for cutting through the noise and advice for making your news newsworthy. How do you gain traction with editors and what makes a good pitch? On the supplier side, meanwhile, the question turned to gaining traction with their A&D audiences by using quality inspired content that is outside the norm. In today’s complex media landscape, tips and tactics for social media were also front and centre – including critical advice on how, when and of course what to post.

Panellist and founder of Communications Collective, Genevieve Brannigan, brought her many years of experience in media and was expert in her insights. Manuela Millan, founder of Meanwhile in Melbourne, spoke from her first-hand experience as both a publisher and designer – and the audience really hung off their words. Overall, this design discussion emphasised the importance of ‘telling your story’, staying authentic to yourself and your brand, publishing with integrity, and the power of good copywriting.

Design Investment: A Journey of Sustainable Luxury and Timeless Value

Kicking off the day at Winning Appliances’ stunning Richmond showroom was a panel talk about investing in quality design and the points where sustainability and luxury overlap. The Saturday Indesign crowds gathered early and packed out the seating area as the panellists shared their stories. Indesign assistant editor and moderator, Timothy Alouani-Roby, was joined on-stage by Freya Robinson, associate at Fender Katsalidis, Harry Boileau, general manager at Winning Appliances, and Luke Stokes, associate at SJB.

The discussion began with the thorny question of how designers decide what they can actually compromise on in a project. The panellists each brought a unique perspective with their different positions in the design industry: Luke as an architect, Freya an interior designer, and Harry as a product supplier.

A crucial insight centred around re-framing the question of luxury as unique to individual needs and non-prescriptive. The panellists then discussed how luxury relates to sustainability, particularly in terms of the maxim, ‘buy well, buy once’. Quality products, whether specified by a designer or chosen by a consumer, constitute an important dimension of sustainability in terms of lifespan and durability. With an audience show-of-hands, attention was also drawn to the widespread importance of generational items of furniture and objects that can simply stand the test of time. The designers also noted the increasingly significant consideration of re-use and retrofitting when plotting out a project from the very beginning.

Illuminating perspectives

In the intimate and beautifully designed AJAR showroom, an international panel gathered to discuss lighting. The talk at this Collingwood Precinct venue was hosted by Indesign Media assistant editor, Jarrod Reedie. Rebecca Martinez, international area manager at Santa & Cole, had travelled all the way from Barcelona to appear at Saturday Indesign; she shared insights from her travels across the world, particularly design inspiration from Scandinavia and the benefits of travelling with your own portable light.

Martinez was joined by Liz Ride from Studio Tate and Sonia Simpfendorfer, director of interior design at Nexus Designs. Illuminating insights from each covered the evolving trends and new technologies in lighting, as well as general questions of ambience and atmosphere.

Well(beings) at Work

The meeting points of wellbeing and workplace continue to set new agendas across the design industry. Jan Henderson, editor and program director of the INDE.Awards, was on hand at Tait in the Collingwood precinct to moderate a panel featuring Jo Dane, founder of Educology, and Dale O’Brien, partner at Gray Puksand.

It was all about the post-pandemic context, with the question of wellbeing placed at the centre of today’s people-led working environments. The panellists discussed how wellbeing continues to define our emotional and physical connection with work, diving into biophilic design and cool product innovations that ensure a healthy connection to nature in the future of work.

Growing Graduates into Leaders

In the impressive Brickworks Melbourne Design Studio, part of Saturday Indesign’s CBD Precinct, the exciting voices of young leaders in architecture and design were focused on the journey of graduates across the industry. Moderator Timothy Alouani-Roby of Indesign Media first asked each panellist to share their first experiences of professional practice, revealing some very different trajectories. Hayball associate, Emma Parkinson, has worked in practice in some form throughout her studies, while Brahman Perera, interior designer and founder of the eponymous studio, initially struggled to find work after university. Daniel Moore, meanwhile, tells a varied story, with experience running his own practice and as the current Victorian State Manager at the AIA.

One of the key insights was that wide-ranging experience is a healthy thing for growing graduates into leaders. In particular, the panellists drew attention to the importance of ‘people skills’ and building relationships. An intriguing question was raised as the designers discussed the idea of ‘fake it until you make it’ – all agreed on the danger of this approach, but also spoke about the importance of learning to be comfortable with uncertainty in the profession.

Each panellist also provided fascinating and constructive thoughts on architecture education, with a general idea emerging that students would benefit from more exposure to practice during their time at university. Designers and members of the public gathered for the talk, but it was the students in the audience who seemed especially inspired (perhaps to become the next generation of leaders in the profession), with several staying behind to continue the discussion with the panellists after the event.

Australian Designed & Made: Successful Design Collaborations

What does it mean for a design collaboration to be successful? What are the challenges and rewards of manufacturing locally in 2023? These were just some of the topics under the microscope at this Richmond Precinct event hosted by Cosh Living and Cantilever. Indesign Media’s Jarrod Reedie was joined by a panel of renowned designers and business owners: Justin Hutchinson from Kett, Travis Dean and Kylie Forbes (both Cantilever Interiors).

From these positions of great experience, the panellists shared fascinating insights into how their brands began working together to celebrate local design. It was a first-hand account of how different operations can come together to form a successful and impactful collaboration in design.

Hybrid At Heart: Future of Kitchens and Bathrooms

The future direction of kitchen and bathroom design was the hot topic at this panel talk hosted by Sub-Zero Wolf, e&s and Omvivo in Saturday Indesign’s CBD Precinct. Aleesha Callahan, editor at Indesign Media, was on hand to chair the discussion with panellists Michael Drescher Director (DKO), John Bornas (creative director, Workroom) and Mim Fanning (interior designer and founder-principal of Mim Design).

From appliances and textures to colours and finishes, all aspects of design in these pivotal parts of the home were up for discussion, with the panellists providing plenty of insight and inspiration. It was especially important given the time most of us have spent at home in recent pandemic years, so the guests drew attention to some of the latest design trends coming out of this hybrid era.

Designing for Beauty and The Environment

An esteemed panel of speakers came together at Jardan in the Richmond Precinct to discuss balancing aesthetics with environmentally conscious design. In particular, the panellists shared inspirational insights into new and unexpected ways of making these two spheres come together. The topic was a crucial one, given the climate crisis as well as the need for designers to do what designers do best – make aesthetically rich spaces for us to use.

The panel explored the brands the brands, product designers and architects pioneering a new course in future-focused design and manufacturing. Led by Indesign Media’s Aleesha Callahan Editor, the speakers were Nick Garnham and Max Cairns – director and head of design at Jardan respectively – as well as Sally Evans, director of graphic design and product development at Nexus Designs.

Don’t be Afraid of Colour and Pattern

This design discussion wore its (colourful) heart on its sleeve, and the message was all about how to be bold with colour and pattern. Arthur G, part of the Richmond Precinct for this year’s Saturday Indesign, was the setting and Bree Leech – interior designer, photographic stylist, Dulux Colour forecaster and stylist at large – moderated the panel talk. Interior designer, Ruby Shields (WOWOWA) and Stephanie Moffitt (design director at Mokum) joined Leech to attack the beige and minimal in design.

The panellists shared their own bold visions of how to design with daring colour. They celebrated new approaches to styling through pattern, colour, texture and form – we were certainly left inspired to use all of these and more in designs that are expressive and eye-catching!

For the Love of Art

At the atmospheric K5 showroom nestled in the busy streets of the Collingwood Precinct, this design discussion focused on bringing art into design projects and all kinds of spaces. Making sure that art was given due thought and consideration, the panellists sought to challenge the way we think about art – specifically drawing attention to how your artistic choices might relate to a wider space.

Aleesha Callahan, editor at Indesign Media, was joined by contemporary Australian Artist, Dean Bowen, CEO of K5 Furniture, Erna Walsh, and general manager of commercial projects and global business at HIDA, Tetsuya Ozaki. The panellists made an important point about the importance of investing in quality art and craftsmanship in order to enjoy an object in all its durability and long lifespan. The attention spanned across furniture, paintings, sculpture, lighting and functional ware to ask how art and craft infuse everyday life with character and joy.

Travel-tecture: Is Sustainable Luxury the Future of Travel and the Places We Stay?

The question of luxury and where it meets with sustainability was again up for discussion, this time at Reece & Neolith in the Richmond Precinct. Editor and INDE.Awards program director at Indesign Media, Jan Henderson, convened a panel of experts comprising Brenton Smith, director at Bates Smart, and Hayley Mitchell, principal at Mitchell & Eades, to discuss sustainable luxury through the lens of travel.

The panel focused on post-pandemic holidays and resort living, with a particular emphasis on the changing dynamics of demand. The speakers drew attention to how consumers are looking for hospitality that is both sustainable and engages with local culture. With hotel and experiential hospitality sectors front of mind, it was a journey into the new age of adaptable design.

With so many ideas up for discussion and a long list of expert speakers to dissect them, it’s easy to see why Saturday Indesign is such a thrilling, inspirational and action-packed day of design. The event will be back in 2024 – and this time it’s in Sydney! In the meantime, make sure you check out the program highlights from the 2023 Design Discussions available here.

The Saturday Indesign team would also love to hear about your experiences if you were in Melbourne for this year’s big day. Share your stories with us at #saturdayindesign and see more highlights at Saturday Indesign Instagram!

The design industry is indeed a social community and 2023 has seen us come together with such enthusiasm and fervour – there can be no doubting that we find new energy and creative opportunity from engaging and collaborating with those around us.

Saturday Indesign (SID), now in its 20th year, really encapsulates that spirit of connectivity that makes the design community so unique and, well, fun. It’s an event that brings people together, invites them into the ‘homes’ of Australia’s leading purveyors of design, to experience showrooms as activated brand environments. Through interactive installations, dynamic design discussions, product launches and sublime hospitality, 34 exhibitors across 26 locations brought Saturday Indesign to vibrant life, this year in Melbourne.

Defined by three major design precincts of the city CBD, Richmond and Collingwood, the 2023 edition of Saturday Indesign enticed 2000 architects, designers and design lovers out from behind the desk to grab a classic ‘SID’ tote (this year created with bag partners Living Edge), and catch jaunty SID-branded buses (made possible thanks to transport partner Neolith), to sleuth out the best products and meet with friends and future contacts in some of Melbourne’s finest design showrooms.

Here we’ll take you on a whirlwind tour through each precinct, calling out the highlights along the way.

Welcome to Richmond

This year Richmond was flagged as Saturday Indesign’s largest Melbourne precinct, offering event-goers a dense and appealing group of exhibitors to visit – all within an easy walk.

Filling visitors with excitement was the official launch of Australia’s Molteni & C flagship store, unveiling creative director Vincent Van Duysen’s ‘Living Concept – A Warm and Fluid Home’.

Across the road, Jardan revealed its latest collection, seamlessly integrating this into its pop-up Café Jardan. Close by was Mobilia, which toured its visitors through its flagship store, and rewarded one lucky person with a trip to the Milan Furniture Fair – what an excellent door prize!

Reece and Neolith invited guests into Reece’s Richmond headquarters, known as The Works, staged The Project with Fraser and Partners, inviting guests to step into a mesmerising VR adventure where they could be whisked away to a breathtaking utopian bathroom scape.

Didier was a major product highlight, presenting two new furniture collections, entitled TanGuor and Etiquette, as well as an expanded selection of pieces for its established Gunzel Range. At Design Precinct could take part in special workshops and fuel themselves on tasty morsels from Supercheese and Olinda Specialist Cellars Gin and Wine Tasting.

Attracting a block-buster crowd for its Darren Palmer talk was Camerich, while Cosh Living and Cantilever hosted an ‘Australian Designed and Made’ discussion with collaborators Travis Dean and Katie Forbs (Cantilever Interiors) and Justin Hutchinson (Kett) on the panel.

Living Edge never disappoints and this year was no exception, with its carpark transformed into a live garden party. People grouped around the Extremis-designed Panigiri table and live musicians entertaining people with Greek tunes. Tucked next door was Thinking Works which rewarded one lucky visitor with a trip to Clerkenwell Design Week in London. And Winnings programmed a day of delicious cooking demonstrations, masterclasses and a barbecue feast.

Can’t get enough of Collingwood

Teaming up with Santa & Cole, AJAR staged The Project with a series of land and air scapes sculpted by the warm light of Santa & Cole’s Tekiò pendant lamp. Also filling their showroom with creative inspiration was AXOR with Plus Architecture who staged an ‘fluid’ water-projecting experience that immersed visitors in a multi-sensory wonderland.

ecf HFA put the focus on product innovation, presenting latest offerings from renowned brands Jonas Ihreborn, Luxxbox, Framery, Sedus and +Halle.

In an expansive warehouse space above its usual quarters, Great Dane brought its unique style with long, blue snaking modular sofas, where visitors photographed themselves to go in the running for a delicately designed Verpan lamp.

Across the road at HAY, a colourful cubby house – indeed the Colour Crate House – constructed by the team from numerous multi-hued crates (constructed from recycled content) created quite the buzz among visitors.

The ultimate hosts, K5 Furniture was home to multiple in-depth conversations – including Masanao Hamaguchi speaking with K5’s Suzette Jackson on the values and design thinking of craft furniture from the Hida Takayama region in the Gifu prefecture of Japan.

At ownworld crowds arrived early for the packed-out Publish Me! Panel discussion, and finished the day with music and dancing with DJ Dowel Jones on the decks. Just around the corner, Tait turned on its outdoor hospitality, staging a ‘how to create a natural Australian garden’ workshop with Phillip Withers.

With plenty to touch and look at, Surface Gallery and Style Timber Floors teamed up with design studio Hot Black delving into dreams and fears to present a Utopia x Dystopia installation.

At the centre of Melbourne’s CBD design scene

At Winya Indigenous Furniture presented the Woolee Woolee Keetwanta – An Indigenous Art Projection, and dazzled guests with a performance by Meriam drag artist and reigning champion of Miss First Nation, Cerulean.

Always a popular CBD destination, SZW with Omvivo and e&s hosted a champagne and oyster hour with David Hicks and showed off pop-y pink bathroom concepts, as well as the latest kitchen and bathroom concepts.

At Signature Floors, guests observed artists wielding tufting guns to highly creative effect. Meanwhile, at Aspect Furniture, the company teamed up with Dunlop Foam, Camira Fabrics, Autex, Wise Wool, and Critical to put the focus on sustainable products and manufacturing processes.

HOW. teamed up with Autex Acoustics for this edition of Saturday Indesign, working with RMIT to stage The Project and in-depth discussions for attentive audiences.

At Brickworks, an exhibition of work by architectural photographer Derek Swalwell was on show, and a rich conversation around Growing Graduates Into Leaders proved to be highly relevant and engaging.
