Creativity and connection were at the fore at Saturday Indesign 2024, when Sydney metamorphosed into a design aficionado’s playground for a blockbuster day on 7 September. The event brought together the design elite with an impressive lineup of panel discussions, showroom tours, product launches and hands-on workshops. From one end of the city to the other, 29 showrooms opened their doors to welcome attendees for a day filled with innovation and inspiration. Designers, architects, industry professionals and enthusiasts came together to foray into the latest in furniture, interiors and product design, all while indulging their design palate (and their tastebuds with bottomless hospitality offerings.)

Attendees had the chance to get up close and personal with bespoke pieces and projects hosted by the most prodigious design companies, sparking discussions about what the future holds for design. Meanwhile, panel talks with design luminaries like Thomas Hamel and Greg Natale pulled crowds eager to hear from the most influential voices in the industry.

The assorted program of events kept attendees on their toes throughout the day. Whether it was taking part in a showroom tour to discover novel collections and concepts or diving into interactive installations that invited participation, there was never a dull moment. Workshops were buzzing with creative ideas, while impromptu conversations sparked collaborations over a drink or two. And let’s not forget the feast of food and drink — generously provided throughout the day. It’s safe to say, you were never left wanting.

As the day wound down, the festivities certainly did not. The afterparty at Ovolo Woolloomooloo, hosted in partnership with Signature Appliances, kept the ebullient energy alive as everyone gathered to celebrate an event. Conversations carried on late into the night, fuelled by the excitement of everything seen and learned (and more booze!)

Saturday Indesign could not have happened without the support of our fantastic sponsors. Ovolo Hotels kept the party spirit alive as our Hotel Partner, Signature Appliances was our Bag Partner, Anterior XL kept everyone hydrated as our Hydration Partner, Klaro was our Studio Bus Partner, CULT provided the hop-on hop-off shuttles, Verosol supplied the lanyards and Saunders Lynn & Co offered essential support as our Exhibitor Supporter.

With an array of events and activities, Saturday Indesign 2024 was a success, showcasing the best of what Australia’s design scene has to offer. Whether you were there for the panel talks, the product launches or simply to soak up the creative atmosphere, it was a day to remember.

The excitement isn’t over yet, as we’re already looking ahead to 2025 when Saturday Indesign returns to Melbourne! The date is yet to be announced, but one thing’s for sure — it’s going to be just as big, bold and inspiring as ever. Stay tuned!

We’re officially counting the days until Saturday September 7, when Saturday Indesign will be back for 2024. And with less than a week remaining, we can’t wait to see Sydney turn into a bustling utopia of design. This year is shaping up to be one of the best events yet, with 36 Exhibitors putting on over 121 activations to create an action-packed day of all the best inspiration, education, and newness you need to fuel Australia’s design scene.

If you’re new to Saturday Indesign, you can expect to be amazed and engaged, with immersive experiences held across a curated event map spanning Alexandria, Waterloo, Surry Hills, Darlinghurst, and Paddington. Forget everything you think you know about design events, because Saturday Indesign is in a league of its own. Running like a “choose your own adventure”, this event sees attendees criss-cross around the city, hopping on and off our event buses and they head into showrooms that have put on timed events, hospitality, and installations for this one off day.

The best part? Everything is totally, 100% free, with just a simple registration giving you access to all the locations, transport, events, food, and drink put on across the event.

All you need to do is complete your free registration, then be sure to check the event map, check the on-day itinerary, and get in early to secure your exclusive Signature Appliances tote bag. If you’re somehow still not sold, read on and discover the five reasons you absolutely have to be at Saturday Indesign on Saturday September 7.

Make new connections and discover Sydney’s best showrooms

The beauty of Saturday Indesign is in its format, where showrooms become their own mini event ecosystems. Instead of visiting brands at a trade show stand, you’ll get to know them better, experiencing them on their home ground to meet their teams, see all their products, and understand their offerings, services, and identity.

For 2024, we have some of Sydney’s best exhibitors on show, either opening up their showroom doors, operating from a satellite space, or sharing a fellow exhibitor’s showroom to get you to the most connections possible across a full day of design.

This year’s exhibitors include: Abey Australia, Academy Tiles, Anterior XL, Autex Acoustics, Cult, DECO Australia, DesignByThem, District, Elton Group, Florabelle Living, Gaggenau, Gohome, Haworth, Infinity Commercial Furniture, Innerspace, Jardan, K5 Furniture, Kaolin Porcelain Surfaces, Kave Home, Klaro Industrial Design, La Cornue, LightCo, Living Edge, Maxton Fox, Milliken, Molmic, ownworld, Pure Interiors, Savage Design, Seeho Su, Special Lights, Stylecraft, V-ZUG, and Winnings

Score some sweet prizes

Saturday Indesign wouldn’t be complete without an iconic prize pool, and this year we’re taking it up a notch, with the inaugural Design Passport in play throughout the event. Featuring a prize pool worth over $35,000, the Design Passport is open to attendees who check in to 10 or more showrooms throughout the day and is the easiest way to win big at Saturday Indesign.

Be on the forefront of local and international design

Saturday Indesign is a must-attend for those looking to get out in front of the pack, with a program of talks and product launches that will deliver you a fresh serving of newness to supercharge your specification.

If talks are your thing, there’s a selection of curated Design Discussions that will have your name on them, including sessions on Australian aesthetics, kitchen design, adaptive reuse, women in architecture and design, product design, outdoor design, and sustainability. If you still can’t get enough, you’ll find other talks rolling out across different showrooms, with the likes of Kave Home, DesignByThem, Living Edge, Innerspace, K5 & Elton GroupMolmic, and Stylecraft all hosting their own sessions.

Top up your fresh knowledge with new products and be the first to see some of the country’s most anticipated launches. From Haworth’s new Task Chair and Milliken’s new carpet collection, to premium induction cooking at Gaggenau and new furniture by Cult, you’ll see newness everywhere you look at Saturday Indesign.

Recharge your design inspiration with The Project

Saturday Indesign alumni know that The Project is one of the best features of the event, showcasing incredible design collaborations for bespoke installations. This year promises to have inspiration coming in spades, with creations that are all must-sees.

First up, Maxton Fox and Kaolin have partnered with PTW for a striking fusion of classic shapes and contemporary composition, while K5 and Elton Group have partnered with artist Jasper Knight to bring commissioned art pieces to life. Not to be outdone, V-ZUG and the Whitehouse Institute of Design have created a studio gallery within the V-ZUG showroom, and Klaro Industrial Design and DECO Australia have collaborated with the students from Billy Blue College of Design for “Project Wander”. Finally, Autex Acoustics and Infinity Commercial Furniture have also connected with the Whitehouse Institute of Design to create an abstract underwater world that explores what it means to “reawaken”.

See Sydney on Show

Every Saturday Indesign is an opportunity to see a city put on a show, and this year is no different, with the best of Sydney distilled into the full-day event. Find local favourites Mecca Coffee, AP Bakery, Cow and Moon Gelato, Messina Gelato, Brooklyn Boy Bagels, and Archie Rose popping up across different showrooms, while nightlife legend Brenton Parkes will also be on the decks into the late afternoon.

If you’re looking for a bit of international flair, Anterior XL are serving up an Italian feast, Kave Home are dishing out paella and striking up some Flamenco, Seeho Su are leaning into Asian Fusion, La Cornue have got an all-french affair, gohome have reuben sandwiches, Florabelle Living have mediterranean snacks and live jazz, Pure Interiors are also serving Italian dishes,  and LightCo are putting on a barbeque and beers

End a day of design with a night to remember

With so much on at Saturday Indesign, you’re in for a day you’ll never forget. But of course, the event doesn’t end when the last bus shuts its doors, rather attendees are invited to dance the night away at the official Saturday Indesign afterparty. Presented by Signature Appliances, be sure to grab a ticket before they run out – this is a party you won’t want to miss!

Saturday Indesign dazzled Sydney on Saturday 21 May, 2022. Set in the best design showrooms right across the city, Saturday Indesign literally, and figuratively, transported thousands of designers, architects and design enthusiasts across town to the best design showrooms who opened their doors to create an unforgettable design experience.

Part of this transformation of the harbour city included  never before seen collaborative installations between exhibiting brands and creative partners as part of ‘The Project’. The Project is one of the most highly anticipated features of Saturday Indesign. A jewel in the crown of the SID program, providing architects, designers and other creatives the ability to work in conjunction with exhibiting companies and their products to create installations, visual displays and interactive experiences within showroom spaces.

This year, The Project was themed around regeneration, prompting exhibitors, creatives and attendees alike to consider their role in a society which is reawakening after a pandemic-induced slumber. As we re-emerge, the stark realities of climate destruction, mass wastage, and a lack of true human connection are issues we as an industry need to address.

Every installation at SID provided attendees with the opportunity to interact with some of the country’s foremost design organisations and experience never before seen installations. Visitors had the chance to vote for their favourite The Project installation, and we are excited to officially announce the winner of The Project people’s choice: Kaolin Tiles in collaboration with ARM Architecture!!

People’s Choice winner of 2022 The Project Kaolin Tiles x ARM Architecture

Cleverly designed by ARM Architecture and crafted by Kaolin, a circular patterned installation spoke to the visitor, where Regeneration became fully realised at a given point or moment in time. As a permanent fixture in Kaolin’s impressive new showroom, the scale, detail, interactivity and depth of meaning of the creation amazed attendees.

Mark Raggatt, Director of ARM Architecture, provided the following words on the project’s meaning and it’s response to the brief:

“To REGENERATE is to grow again, or bring new life and vigour, to be reborn. What more perfect theme could we be given after all we’ve been through.

How can we reflect on this recent past and see a new future? Can we hope to be reborn?

We are not the first to ask these questions. Hans Holbein the Younger painted The Ambassadors in 1533. At the base of the painting is a dark smudge, an incomprehensible blemish it would seem but standing in just the right spot, looking from the perfect vantage point we would see a skull emerging from the painting. The skull is a perspectival anamorph a distorted image revealed only through the foreshortening of perspective created by our viewing.

The word anamorph is derived from the Greek prefix -ana meaning ‘again’ and the word morphe meaning shape or form – literally again-form or to shape again, or perhaps to REGENERATE.

Here, we placed a mirrored cone on the contorted Kaolin tiles, the reflection in the mirror reveals an undistorted checkerboard, this anamorph is called a conical catoptic or mirrored anamorph. But in this mirror is something else what seems like a white streak across the tile is regenerated as the word Eternity in the conical mirror.

Eternity is part of the folklore of Sydney. Arthur Stace woke at 4am most mornings to chalk Eternity on the streets of Sydney. Surely this Eternity is the hope of regeneration for the world – that this time it will all last forever. A hope that this regenerated reflection will linger in the mirror.”

Voting was tight, with seven other authentic and exceptional installations across the event footprint, The Project was an absolute star along the extensive design trail laid out by Saturday Indesign 2022. Here are some of the highlights:

1. Stormtech x Squillace

Visitors were guided through the exhibition space by illuminated cubes containing Stormtech’s product off cuts, showcasing Stormtech’s practice of recycling and sustainability. Renewing and re-using products to reduce the environmental footprint is leading to growth and new versions of what has been. At the end of the path experience an immersive display was reached demonstrating growth, renewal and flexibility.

2. Anterior XL x Plus Architecture

Through various iterations, Plus Architecture and Anterior XL were able to develop a demountable structural system that is easily used to stack stone slabs, creating a piece that restores its sculptural qualities. It is a prototype that involves cutting up a stone slab, with the concept that after the exhibition, it can be taken apart and reused for other purposes if required.

3. Porter’s Paints x PTW

To replicate the psychological transformation of being “reborn”, Porter’s Paints and PTW decided to reference colour strategies from a variety of influences such as Johannes Itten, Joseph Albers, Sanzo Wada, experimenting with colour action, layering and in turn creating a journey of colour interaction.

4. Wilkhahn x Geyer

Geyer and Wilkhahn took visitors through a journey of the evolution of the workplace, a transcendental and experiential installation that connected past, present and future. Anchored in the exploration of Wilkhahn’s iconic FS line, which has seen iterations and regenerations since its launch in 1980, the project brought a mix of physical, visual and augmented reality mediums to represent the workplace multiverse.

5. SeehoSu x Hammond Studio

SeehoSu’s approach to “regeneration” demonstrated how effortlessly good design and sustainability can be achieved when nature, knowledge and craftsmanship is inherently embedded in each and every piece of their furniture.

Collaborating with the talented team at Hammond Studio, this The Project installation invited visitors to come and reconnect with industry peers in the iconic Molo lounge.

6. Maker&Son x Liv Green

This collaboration created an Indoor Forest at the Maker&Son Alexandria Showroom transforming the space into another world including an indoor forest experience complete with trees and bracken throughout.

7. Ignite Fireplace x Billy Blue

Teaming with Ignite, the students of Billy Blue College of Design at Torrens University regenerated the fireside experience with the best of Australian design and crafting.

Utilising the concept of DAY/NIGHT, they looked to challenge the role of the fireplace in the contemporary home by igniting the senses.

Saturday Indesign is an event that truly offers something for everyone, with design lovers of all walks of life can find something that piques their interest. From workshops to hospitality, product launches to DJ sets, the 2022 Saturday Indesign program brought us a schedule that was overflowing with design inspiration to love.

Each year, the Saturday Indesign speaker series is a program highlight, with a mix of curated and brand hosted sessions packing a serious educational punch. 2022 was no different, with over 15 knowledge-led panels, seminars and discussions all held across an action-packed Saturday in Sydney.

From the latest in workplace to Instagram design trends, here are some of our favourite educational moments of the day!

Sustainability

The topic that’s never far from front-of-mind, sustainability took a moment to shine at Saturday Indesign, with dedicated talks at SeehoSu and Thinking Works. At Seehosu, a panel that included Marcus Piper and Virginia Wong-See from the Regional Architecture Association, Uncle Phillip Bligh, John Wardle’s Jasmin Williamson and Aidan Mullan from Saturday Indesign’s Sustainability Partner Interface, spoke about sustainability, business practices and cultural consultation to a packed house, with Uncle Phillip Bligh providing particular insight into the embodied knowledge of First Nation’s people and the ways in which working with Country should influence and lead sustainable building practices.

Sustainability also came into focus at Kaolin Tiles, where a morning talk on the New Dawn of Materiality brought material usage and sourcing into a direct conversation about making more sustainable design choices.

Workplace

Perpetually one of the day’s most anticipated topics, workplace once again stole the spotlight at the event. Herman Miller took over the top of Living Edge’s showroom, being the place to be at lunchtime with some of Sydney’s leading workplace designers holding court with Indesign Editor Alice Blackwood. A little earlier, Wilkhahn put the end user front and centre, bringing experts from CBRE, Dexus and Lendlease to debate the future relevance of workplaces. Meanwhile, Square Bear looked at ensuring wellbeing in the workplace with Sonder’s Louise Butler.

Art & Trends

New trends and the intersection of design and art always informs much of the Saturday Indesign event program, but this year we saw it emerge as a real focus amongst the day’s speaker series’. Polytec set their space at Infinity Commercial Furniture (also shared with Laine Furnishings) abuzz when Marylou Cafaro gave an address on upcoming joinery trends, Technogym offered a deepdive into the coming together of art and technology with their new range by acclaimed interior designer Antonio Citterio and Kaolin once again offered a look at the global trends in porcelain tiles.

Over at dedece, Habitus editor Aleesha Callahan brought us “Designing Rooms and Influencing People”, where Alexandra Ponting (AP Design House) and Stefania Reynolds (Studio Johnston) walked the audience through how they navigate designing spaces in an Instagram age.

Covering Verticals

No program is complete without a current look at both Education and Retail design, with both spaces facing rapid changes to keep up with what we as a society look for in 2022. For the first session of the day, Winning Appliances brought experts together to explore how the rise of online spaces has placed a demand on retail design to get experimental to tempt people, while at 2pm, Stylecraft played host to a lively session on Education – particularly topical with homeschooling giving so many a taste for the importance of safe, productive and constructive spaces to learn.

Over at Krost, design itself was the topic of discussion, with an engaging discussion on running a design business in 2022 playing out.

Everything and Anything

Other talks covered a range of different topics, from the serious and pressing issue of Modern Slavery (hosted by Square Bear and Thinking Works), to an enticing conversation on architecture of Travel (hosted by Anterior XL).

Smaller and more intimate talks were hotly anticipated, from Special Lights’ morning session on Architecture and Lighting, to Molmic’s casual chat “Meet the Maker”. Perhaps one of the highlights of the day was over at Fred International, where William Smart drew a crowd as he spoke to melding old and new and creating a symbiosis between heritage and contemporary design.

On Saturday May 21st, Sydney sprung to life with the latest iteration of Saturday Indesign: architecture and design’s most loved design event. Inverting everything you thought you knew about design events, Saturday Indesign put the focus on networking, relationships, product specification and the good times, with 2022’s program ensuring it was a day to remember!

2,000 architects, designers and design lovers braved wild weather and a federal election for SID 2022, descending on this year’s event as they worked their way around 31 exhibitors in 25 showrooms across four dynamic design precincts. Sydney’s design scene was front and centre, as new connections were made, products and showrooms launched, talks and workshops held and hospitality was served.

Miss out on all the fun? Relive the best of the 2022 Saturday Indesign program below!

Alexandria

The biggest precinct of 2022 didn’t hold back any punches, ensuring there really was something for everyone. From Krost’s all-day waffle bar and beer garden, to Maker&Son’s jumping photoshoot set in an indoor forest, and Space Furniture’s immersive and futuristic installation, Alexandria was buzzing from start to finish.

Living Edge set the tone with DJ’s, donuts and a multi-coloured tribute to Gufram’s Cactus. Inside the space, collaborating partners Herman Miller hosted one of the talks-of-the-day, where a panel dived into the future of working.

The precinct held installations a-plenty, with The Project providing fertile ground for some incredible creative collaborations: Porter’s Paints and PTW wowed with suspended colour fabrics creating a journey based on the science of colour; Kaolin partnered with ARM Architecture to create a permanent display which used circular patterns to speak to regeneration; Anterior XL and Plus Architecture installed an innovative and reusable demountable structural stone system; and Stormtech made use of show partner Caroma’s impressive bathroom showroom to present a collaborative work with Squillace, where illuminating cubes of offcuts highlighted recycling and sustainability practices.

Residential design got a moment to shine at Molmic’s relaxing space, while Ignite Fireplace studio worked with Steelcase to keep us warm with impressive displays and mulled wine.

CBD

The precinct that never sleeps: the CBD started early and partied into the night, while still making sure everyone got a wholesome, wellness fix. Visitors to the CBD formally kicked off their Saturday Indesign experience the evening before the event, with event veterans District going off-schedule with an exclusive launch of their brand new showroom. Hosting international guests from Normann Copenhagen (who made a second appearance on Saturday!), the showroom launched in style and set a high precedent for the day that followed.

Visitor favourites and returning brand Stylecraft brought us a captivating talk on education, but ensured learning was done in style with drinks and canapes served on their commercial floor, with sweeping city views and DJs into the night. This carried on into dedece where getting published and designing for an Instagram age was a standout in the afternoon scheduling block.

Learning was kept front and centre at Thinking Works and Squarebear, where experts spoke on topics ranging from Sustainability, Modern Slavery and Wellbeing in the Workplace.

On the periphery of the CBD, newcomers Technogym and JANUS et Cie gave us an injection of wellness and wellbeing. Technogym showed us the crème de la crème of fitness design while JANUS et Cie’s floral-based installation spilled onto the streets of Rushcutters Bay, inviting passersby in for a pasta workshop set amongst leading outdoor furniture.

Surry Hills

With a focus on smaller showrooms and curated displays, Surry Hills – as the CBD’s partner in crime – was a hub of activity from start to finish. Savage Design and Sussex Taps was a must-visit for many, where a collaboration all about craftsmanship and considered design gave way to an immersive showroom tour. Many attendees also got their first look at Flokk’s showroom, as well as at their launch of the HÅG Tion, arguably the world’s most sustainable task chair.

Over at Wilkhahn, a morning talk on workplace was an informative precursor to an afternoon Ping-Pong tournament, while for many, the afternoon location of choice was Fred International, where people flocked to the design-led space to hear Jan Henderson in conversation with Australian design icon William Smart.

Waterloo

The Waterloo district kicked off Saturday morning with an early start at Winning Appliances, where a VIP breakfast was followed by the first official scheduled activation: a talk on the future of retail spaces, held beneath the impressive domed ceilings of SJB’s “Casba”. A short stroll away was SeehoSu and Koda Lighting, where Koda presented the future of lighting (see Vibia’s Plusminus) with a side of paella and a swig of sangria, while Seeho Su brought the house down with a talk on sustainability in their brand new showroom.

Sydney culinary legends Messina Gelato and Archie Rose popped up at Infinity Commercial Furniture, who partnered with Polytec and Laine furnishings to create a holistic showroom experience, while Special Lights brought in Brokenwood Wines to curate wine pairings with some of their standout lighting products.

Program Highlights

Beyond the precincts, Sydney studios zipped around in private buses, where a VIP experience elevated the Saturday Indesign experience for 15 lucky teams. At an event where connections are at the heart, the Studio Buses – which returned for their second year – proved an enjoyable way to promote team building, navigate the event and take the party on wheels. The studio buses, along with our iconic hop-on/hop-off bus fleet, were proudly sponsored by Neolith, who ensured that Saturday Indesign kept moving.

The entire event also got a little bit greener thanks to inaugural Sustainability Partners Autex Acoustics and Interface, who contributed to carbon offsetting, sourcing event collateral with a lower environmental impact and helping to build a conversation around event and design sustainability. With Saturday Indesign 2023 already in the works, the challenge is on to continue to improve the environmental footprint of all design events!
